    1. Seems like not long ago the 5m figure was reached. Population really is flying up.

Go us! (well, not me, I’m not getting any. But go.. you guys!)

    2. Lucky considering the numbers of Irish leaving Vs returning.

We’d be in a bad way in terms of services if it wasn’t for migrants picking up the slack

Edit: would be good to see a breakdown of average age of Irish population Vs non Irish. Suspect that stresses the point even more

23% increase in people over 65 in the country since 2019 is alarming, that’s such a ticking time bomb

    4. 78,000 increase in people, only 30,000 houses built per year. And this has been the pattern for many years. It’s not sustainable.

I was one who returned. Been waiting 6 months to get a driving test so I can purchase property in the countryside which is all I can afford. Each month I’m getting increasingly priced out of the market. Might need to leave again. Pretty disappointing.

    6. This is an underestimate also.

Probably at least 100,000 people not counted. Maybe more.

Our population has already passed 5.5m.

In the EU we’ve passed the population of Slovakia and soon Finland.

We’ll pass Denmark and Bulgaria in a few years also.

Amazing that so many people want to come here, despite not having enough services.

These people must be coming from total hellholes.

    8. I live in Switzerland. We have 27% non Swiss living in the country. The population of Switzerland is nearly double that of Ireland and with about 1/3 of the habitable space that Ireland has. The problem Ireland has is not immigrants, it is that everything is Dublin centric and Dublin spawls out more and more with poor infrastturcture. Dublin should not be so big and big towns and cities around Ireland should be bigger. Here in Switzerland, Zurich is the biggest city but is tiny compared to what Dublin is. There are a core 8 or 9 cities with similar populations but most importantly with great transport links between them all.

They should looking at this rather than complaining about shortages and blaming immigrants for problems, which is clearly not the case

    9. I am one of those that returned. If you can find accommodation and a job paying 40k a year, this is the best place in the world.

I have neither, so its a fucking kip ill be leaving as soon as i can.

Fantastic to see when so many countries have the opposite problem. Go Ireland

This feels very unsustainable to me, to many coming in to little people being born here, and it’s putting a massive strain on our housing demand now.

At least through natural increase e.g births you can forecast housing need decade’s in advance.
