Usually these are extreme cases presented in such articles, I often find pita gyros around 3.5-4€ in Athens. That said it is very obvious that the prices are getting higher and higher every year and gyros isnt the casual “ no time to cook today, let’s grab a pita“ option anymore.
Corner cases. Yes it’s more expensive of course but you can easily find one for around 4€.
In Sweden the price of a döner is often times more than 10 euro.
Pita gyros used to cost 1,50-2 euro max at the start, now we are at 4 if you are lucky, it’s no more the I can’t make dinner let’s go the easy option
Isn’t like, *everything* at record prices these days? We’ve kind of had a global inflation problem.
For centuries the cost of a Döner was 3€ all across Germany. It was a true working class food, great amount of calories and vegetables.
Suddenly the price hiked to 4€, okay not good but also not dramatic. It’s the way of things, inflation exists.
Then the Covid pandemic happened and the price of a Döner raised to 8€ and never recovered from that.
Döner isn’t a everyday working class food anymore , nowadays it’s a half restaurant visit.
Food prices have also increased in my country the last 2 years and it’s insane how much some food costs. It legit is so expensive that cheap stuff you used to eat daily back then now you can’t even afford to buy once. I’m not sure what the heck happened. Where are all those EU food mountains? Now you may as well pay farmers to pour gold into the sewers next time there is a milk overproduction.

Only a handful of establishments in the city still offer a gyro for under 5 euros.
**What’s happening in Attica**
In the Attica region, even a simple wrapped gyro now prompts careful consideration. Prices at local grills start at 3.70 euros and can climb to 5.20 euros . A single pork or chicken skewer ranges from 2.40 to 3.70 euros, while a full portion of gyro or souvlaki can cost anywhere from 11 to 13.50 euros.
For a family of four, ordering two wrapped gyros per person could mean spending between 30 and 40 euros—a significant hit to the household budget.
Industry insiders warn that rising ingredient costs and higher operational expenses for businesses may lead to further price hikes. Some predict that the price of a wrapped gyro could stabilize around 5 euros in the near future.
In Bulgaria a duner or gyros costed 2.50 to 3 eur a year ago, now it is hitting 5.
In Bulgaria duner is 5-6 euro. This year Greece feels much cheaper than Bulgaria.
In 2000 this would hardly cost 0,75€ to 1€. Min. salaries were ~500€/month.
Today min. salaries are ~750€/month and that *shit* costs 6€. Go figure it out why people everywhere, not only Greece, are suffocated economically.
When I visited Greece in 2019, I bought lunch for 2 people (2 souvlaki, 2 gyros, 2 drinks) for €9 in Athens. Those were the days!
Meanwhile, in Scotland, a local Greek place does a gyros for £10 (€12) and a gyros plate for £14 (€16)… 😭
Did you mean Turkish Doner ?
Try going to Poland – ha. Doner for average price of 7 euro. Margherita pizza for 9 euro at minimum – doesnt matter where. You really have nothing to cry about. The only cheap remaining food is Żabkas fast foods or McD with coupons.
I would have to play double for that. Six Euros sounds amazing to be honest. But I understand the income in Greece is a lot lower.
This was always the default go to food for many low to middle income families, living wage isn’t that high either so this does sting more than you think
I was in the supermarket the other day and saw you can buy a frozen (!!) döner for 8€. A few years ago i would be a fresh warm döner for half that money. Truly insane.

Wow, I wish street food in Lithuania was a near as cheap. Kebabs start from 8-8.5 Euro and upward, the Big Tasty is smth around Eur w/o fries and drin, if you take thise into accoubt it is around 11 Eur.
The Greek prices for Gyro spin my head around and around
A good Gyros Pita in Germany is still around 7,50 € – 8 €.
A „Gyros komplett“ including french fries and salad is around 11,50 € – 13 €. It’s still not too expensive.
They either increase the prices or reduce the portions to keep the same price or limit the price hike as much as they can. I remember we were complaining years ago about them going to 3€, now some spots sell them for 4 and 5€ a piece.
It’s no longer a cheap, fulfilling option it once was. It’s slowly becoming a once every two weeks thing for a lot of Greeks.
Is it really fair to call it a Greek food? Putting fries into döner does not make it a different food, it just makes it a worse version of döner.
Off topic but what about tobacco prices in Greece, I remember paying 3 Euros for 50 G of Golden Virginia, today price is 7.70 Euros for 30 G
