UK 2p works for anything that takes €2, which is basically everywhere except Tesco that’ll need your Kiwi $1.
Can’t accidentally spend it like trying to remember to have a specific €1/€2 for trolleys; and €2 shape tokens aren’t actually that common.
Thankfully.

A 100 yen coin also works for a euro sized trolley. Imported car came with a free trolley token.

Find a hacksaw in store, cut your house key and use it, then break a window to get in to your house when you get home.
I have a plastic trolley key. It’s hard enough to unlock the trolley, but soft enough that I can easily pull it out of the mechanism.
Handy for taking euros from abandoned trolleys around the car park.
Come back to me when you make it work with a 1 USD bill.

Do they not just give out plastic tokens at the customer service desk?

When euros first came in, a French 10 franc coin was the same size as a 1 euro coin. Got good use in vending machines back then
In a bind you can get a 5c to work, but you gotta apply pressure down and push the coin to the front as you slide the tray closed for it to go in, but it will go in. I just use my car key.
