12 transfusions a year. Assuming he lives to 100 that would be 1200 transfusions. I hope science discovers a cure for this lad.

Oh he’s a cute little boy. If you’re considering donating, here’s your sign! I started donating a couple years ago and because I never had a common childhood illness (CMV), my blood is given to neonates which feels really special.

    3. We really need to boost the number of blood donors by a huge margin, but the infrastructure just isn’t there. There aren’t enough donor centres, the messaging isn’t reaching people.

I’m banned from donating in the UK for life having received a transfusion 9 years ago. I live in Canada, and since December 2024, all British, Irish, and French persons, regardless of receiving a transfusions or not, are allowed donate every 2 months for men, 3 for women. The UK its 3 months for men, 4 for women. The science has evolved, the NHS blood services needs to evolve too.

    4. Just so people know, donating is an easy process to arrange and do.

The app is dead simple and once you’ve been through the initial setup it takes less than a minute to book your next appointment. I’ll book it sometimes on my way home.

I’m usually in and out in less than an hour with and the nurses have always been great with a big needlephobe wuss like me. I hit my first milestone of 10 donations last week and have no plans to stop.

Go and visit the vampires. Get your biscuits and Seabrook crisps. Go and save a life.
