      We never had though, EU was and still is designed as an economic block. That is where we excel, now the EU needs to transform itself into a geopolitical force, this isn’t done overnight

      Less weight than it used to, perhaps but Trump is probably not there forever.

      There will probably be mid-term elections next year which could well see the Democrats take control of Congress which would significantly limit Trump.

      Although, Trump’s actions have shown that Europe has been too reliant on the US for too long and needs to reduce that reliance.

      Then stop complaining, start DOING something about it!
      This should be the thought process. To be a geopolitical power means to get aligned on a goal and pursue those interests in a peaceful civilized matter unless its about dealing with dictators and warmongers to prevent war and escalation.

      It sounds easy and is hard to do but still just start to develop an idea would be good

      Europe is more interested now in violating the private correspondence of its citizens and importing trucks from Trump’s friends then anything else. Ursula especially is more interested in protecting her brothers betting businesses in Eastern European countries then doing real work.

      The idea that Europe has no weight is simply wrong. The EU still represents about 15% of global GDP, an enormous share given its relatively small population and territory.

      Overstated narratives about the EU being ‘weak’ or ‘irrelevant’ often serve the interests of powers like Russia, China, or even the U.S., which benefit from a divided or self-doubting Europe.

      While military power has become more visible due to the war in Ukraine, defining a bloc’s global relevance only by its military is misleading. The EU’s economic, regulatory, and diplomatic influence continues to shape global affairs in ways that cannot be ignored.

      This is the consequence of rejecting federalisation, filling Brussels and Strasbourg with second rate politicians and caring more about fishing rights and whose face is on currency than substantial 21st century concerns. A continuation of this idiocy will just make Europe smaller and smaller especially with a declining population.

      Yes Europe has been largely successful economically (although it is now massively being left behind by the US GDP), but it has been more akin to a plump cow to be milked than the tiger it thinks it is.

      Fiscally conservative mindsets and no support for risk and start up cultures means we fumble hard to innovate especially in STEM sectors. The talent in Europe is obviously there but then there’s no infrastructure to support such projects and people, which is why they move to places like the US. Which is why in sectors like AI, EV and green technology we’re totally outmatched by places like the US, China and even smaller blocs like South Korea. It’s embarrassing, quite frankly as a future student in CompSci, even though Europe has the edge of „better standard of living and safer life“ I’m not sure this is going to be so true anymore down the line with where the European economy is going with these forecasts. Europe is going to regret not stepping up and taking risks now for its future, its already seeing the effects now as Draghi says

      It definitely has lot of economic power but it does not know how to use it.

      The way EU always folds around Trump makes them look subservient.

      It is not matter of money or army. It is matter of attitude. Russia is quite weak compared to EU but it knows how to throw around its weight.

      EU needs to stop being doormat of USA and be its own player. Unless and until EU does that no one is gonna take it seriously.

      Look, yeah. I strongly hope Europe has a powerful weight in world affairs, but it’s like when Toto draws back the curtain and we find the Wizard of Oz was a fraud. Europe has been called out by the US, Russia and China and folded. You’ve got a problem.

      Europe has been concentrating on perception rather than reality. Pretending to be green while dependent on dirty Russian oil and gas. Using packaging laws and green miles to shut out trade from developing countries. Falsifying carbon credit schemes for multinational profit and moral superiority.

      The answer is simple. Be more honest, be more direct, and use less tricks. Europe will be more trusted when it is more trustworthy.

      The EU will never have a chance to be a major power until or unless the member states decide to vest far more sovereign power in Brussels and cede individual autonomy to the centralized government. The idea that the EU can somehow backdoor its way into power via passing regulations and expressing “deep concern” over this and that is a fools fantasy. And I don’t see the European nations ever wanting to give up the requisite autonomy for it. Each region would get mad about something. So no. Europe is a relatively irrelevant place in terms of dictating terms to the world. Right now that’s the US, China, and Russia. India may if it gets its act together join the club.

      We needs to spend more money on defense, less regulations (in tech/AI, etc), less ecobullshit (India alone pollute way more than the entire EU bloc) and many others countries without any kind of restrictions.

      Well, Europe(or rather its member countries) needs a big stick, because we’re back to a time when if you don’t have a powerful military, all you can do is keep quiet and agree to everything, economy without power is useless.

      Of course we don’t. That is because our leaders are mainly focused on stupid regulations rather than creating real weight. We don’t have tech companies, we don’t have meaningful manufacturing, weak space program. Even our car manufacturers outsource majority of the production…

      Draghi’s criticism is premature but fair; Europe is being challenged militarily, has lost its influence both in the US and the global south, is losing its economic competitiveness, is straining to maintain unity (partly due to foreign powers successfully using propaganda to undermine its democracies) and most of its neighbors are experiencing varying degrees of political instability.

      Europe’s current generation of politicians (with some notable exceptions) are not visionaries or leaders by any shot and are failing to meet the challenges. The prospects are dire and European nations are at serious risk of becoming lesser powers.

      He is correct. Look at how Trump has cut Europe out of any negotiations in a conflict that intimately involves Europe. They are beckoned to the table to hear what the big boys decided.       Europe has been paying tribute to the US for decades, that’s why we have US bases in Europe, US didn’t allow other Europe countries to have nuclear weapons and US fonds and technology companies do whatever they want in Europe.

      USA decided about who will join EU for the last 30 years. It decides about anything important. It will not change without EU finding its spine.
