Submission statement: South Korea, the world’s second largest shipbuilder behind China, has pledged serious dollars to revitalizing the US’s own shipbuilding industry as part of its trade negotiations with Trump. While the US used to be competitive in the space, it hasn’t been a major player in decades. Hanwha and Hyundai, among others, would expand or even take over certain US shipyard in an effort to push back against Chinese competitors. But, questions remain around the timeframe required, industry headwinds in the face of trade uncertainties, and labor force dynamics in the US.
