It’s literally the same thing that happened to the original Ultimate line of Marvel comics. A jumping on point for new and relapsed readers, and something fresh for long term fans. High profile artists and writers not contained with 80 years of canon.

Made this post to highlight what DC is doing with their comics. I’m personally new to comics. Was never big superhero person, more or so indifferent, but recently took a dive in from a recommendation.

The Absolute Universe that DC has now released is incredible imo. The concept of it is that the balance of good and evil is weighed against our favorite hero’s and much of what made them invincible is removed making their fight harder.

In many ways this to me this is something the reflects a more contemporary story telling style. It’s feel very fresh.

Once I got into DC comics I realized that DC has some of the most epic graphic novels there are in the Watchman and Sandman. Really some incredible reading I had been missing out on. Also the art has gotten SO good. Just mouth watering.

More absolute talk there is a sub where each issue gets a discussion post.

My interest was morbid curiosity at first, i thought the idea and concepts were a couple decades late but wanted to see what they were trying. I was blown away by the quality of the books and am hooked. They managed to do something new with these characters while still staying true to them. Absolute Martian Manhunter and Absolute Wonder Woman are obviously the two best of the line but each series has been really great and interesting takes on the concepts and characters.

They made comics with good ideas and good art about popular characters

Because it’s fun and new and changes enough to feel different while still keeping the tradition alive. Absolute Batman is goated.

They made heroes underdogs again, and not through insurmountable galaxy level threats but through shifting these characters roots into a more grounded and dynamic story than some of their almost century old backstories

I finally just read a few issues of Absolute Batman last night.

Entertaining, kind of interesting. I haven’t been on the best of terms with Snyder’s writing since he adopted the “crazy and stupid because comics!” line of reasoning.

Goddamn love the art by Dragotta, though. I’m all about artists with a singular and easily identifiable style, and his stuff is that to a T.

    8. looking at it from just an aesthetics thing, it’s very snyderverse, 90’s EXXXTREME kind of style people enjoyed

Because DC hasn’t been able to keep a continuity together for over five years

Because it allows the writers the freedom to write new stories that are less constrained by the massive history in comics these characters have. They also only have to worry about continuity of the Absolute universe instead of all DC comics.

I’ve been enjoying being a comic reader because between Absolute DC and The New Ultimate Universe in Marvel has been killing it. Learning about these versions of the characters as they learn about themselves has been a blast.

Idk about anyone else but the arts cool. That’s why I like it. That and I have a thing for reimagining of well-known characters

    13. It’s doing something different and shacking up established characters while being easy to jump into
