> The Union of Taxation Employees, which represents CRA workers, says nearly 3,300 call centre employees have lost their jobs since May 2024. Consequently, says the union, on average, fewer than five per cent of callers reach an agent.
> Brière said more job losses are expected at CRA’s call centres due to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent call for federal ministries to significantly reduce program spending. The spending targets would see cuts of 7.5 per cent in the fiscal year that begins in April 2026, followed by 10 per cent the year after and 15 per cent in 2028-29.
Dear God. If only 5% of calls are getting through and already people and businesses have been spending months dedicated to getting a response, any amount of cuts let alone figures like those would fully collapse the CRA.
It’s quite clear they need the opposite of cuts. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not a similar story across the board. I know VAC has been a nightmare to deal with and get a hold of for a long long time. It sounds nice to some to hear the word ‘cut’ but the reality is these are the already overburdened social services we rely on. Hopefully somebody can reel Carney back from this.

Everyone calls for cuts to the civil service… until they wait hours on the phone and their passport is 8 weeks late.
How long ago was it that Canadians were losing their minds because there was a delay in passport processing?

I called them last week and got a call back in 45 minutes. What I called for was cleared up right away. Was very happy with the experience

I honestly don’t get why CRA is getting cut. If deficit spending is the concern, you put more money into the CRA. Their entire job is generate revenue. That’s what they do. Each dollar invested sees a positive return.

I’ve called the CRA a handful of times in my entire life. For personal income taxes, most people can get help anywhere online or even those volunteer tax preparers at tax time. I’ve only needed them once on the phone and they were very helpful. I wouldn’t have even needed to call if their income tax guide was written a bit more clearly because honestly sometimes it’s like a „choose your adventure“ book where you are going back and forth across lines and forms to figure things out.
It doesn’t matter anyway because AI is going to take all these jobs eventually.

And because CRA has already layed off so many, creating a backlog of very angry callers who treat the agents like shit, they’ve implemented policies to limit call times. They track so many stats and constantly tell the agents to do better, leading to burn out. The CRA union is trash, they rolled over for the government last strike.

I filed a refile on my 2023 in May. I called them in June asking when it would be taken care of and they basically told me to fuck off. Their “projected timeline” is to have the refile assed by November. Their standards say a refile should take two weeks.
I opened a complaint with the ombudsman and haven’t heard jack shit. They owe me like $1200… imagine if it were the other way around? I cannot stand the CRA.
