Not to be flippant, but that sounds a little like saying, „He’s out searching for a job while his kids starve“ – we can achieve none of our priorities unless we prioritize economic growth and opportunity.
This is probably the best opportunity in a century to get a good chunk of what they have been promised.
Four reservations within fifty km of the city I live in have had boil water advisories or fed government provided bottle water when there is no reason not to connect them to nearby municipal water systems. Hope the government will finally deliver on their promises.
Kind of ironic that the people who claim to want to shut down parks and take back land to live “the way their ancestors lived off the land”, then want modern water services and use the government funded healthcare.
Having their land stolen was awful, but that happened generations ago and there’s much better ways we could be improving the lives of the First Nations than just tossing millions of dollars at the hands which doesn’t trickle down and the general population on the reserves have to live in squalor.
I also genuinely don’t believe it when I hear people say they just want to go back to their old way of life, because that would also mean they have no clean water sources, healthcare, technology, guns, ATVs, etc.
It just seems like they want to use the parts of the modern world that benefit them and take as much as they can from the government in return.
From their perspective I totally understand it, but as a taxpayer and a fellow citizen of this land, I think we really need to change how we address the problems facing the First Nations people.
Is there any reason why the First Nations can’t tackle the problem themselves, especially the wealthier reserves? Seems like the only alternative is to wait years or decades for the Feds to fix it for them.
They can definitely fund their own projects but the allocation of money elsewhere is the problem. Plenty of places around Canada that are off reserve have boil water advisories too. Being often remote does not help either.
Yeah, you can look up the financial statements for most First Nation bands. They receive a lot of money and can fund these projects themselves.
