I am very pro universal healthcare. What I don’t see in this article is how Oregon would handle an influx of people in need of expensive healthcare services if we were the only or one of a few states that did this. Is that not a concern?
California should’ve been first. Cali-Oregon-Washington, team up and make it happen. Bring Michigan and NJ and NY in. Let red states keep their bullshit.
That… may affect my plans to stay in Florida till I finish college (out of state tuition is just too brutal). Got a family member in Oregon too…

I think this is a great test run for a larger policy. I wish this is successful.
Canada’s universal healthcare system, Medicare, started incrementally with Saskatchewan’s hospital plan in 1947.
I applaud Oregon for exploring this and am hopeful they can get it over the finish line. If the government is such a big, bad, scary thing, surely private healthcare will have no problem competing against it
I am an Oregonian, and I would HAPPILY pay my 1300 premium in the form of taxes every month, whatever they are.
This is great. Universal healthcare is one of those things that can still work even if it’s at the state level. Although, it’s obviously better at the federal level.
Believe it when I see it, there’s a lot of stuff we could do, but it usually gets derailed. While Oregon is less bad than other states about that kind of thing, that’s significantly due to a more active initiative and referendum system (unsurprising given we invented it in America).
Make sure to follow texas’s example and handcuff the Republicans to the house floor first. (Oregon also has quorum rules)

People here in TN don’t want „others“ to have free or affordable health care. It’s weird because people in rural areas vote against these things when many of them are in desperate need of health care. Then they complain when they really need to see a doctor.
I need to move to Oregon then.
How will we afford it? Love the idea but we don’t even pay sales tax.
I would move in a second.
I see a lot of lawsuits from the medical industry delaying this for years if not decades until it fizzles away.
Other issue I see is that if everyone is covered, then the amount of people using the medical system will skyrocket, which will lead to very long wait times.
I support universal health care but its not as simple as just saying, hey, everyone has it now.

Hell yeah. That’s how it happened in Canada too, with one province deciding they could do better, and proving it.
I’m sure the Supreme Court will say they can’t.
So … they created a board of nine experts to research a way to do it. That’s all? There’s no real plan yet?

I don’t live there but please, please, please. Even if I can’t benefit this would help so many people have much better lives.
There is no way to do this state-by-state. The first state to try will get slammed by people from the rest of the country looking for help, and the state-level system will crash. It has to be a large bloc of states all at once, at the very least.
WA and OR should just secede at this point so that SCOTUS cannot legally force them to disband whatever universal single payer health insurance system they manage to concoct.
Hawaii would like to know who wrote this headline.
They mandate every employer offer insurance to everyone working 20+ hours. Between that and wide adoption of Medicaid, 99%+ of Hawaii residents have health insurance.
On top of that, they’ve been working on true universal healthcare for more than a decade and are way farther along than Oregon.

As an oragonian, I am skeptical. All this state does is pass things that make no sense economically, things that are not in the budget, and then pretend that it didn’t happen once it becomes a disaster.
Maybe there is funding, idk, but I am more fearful than optimistic

Oregon is almost there. On Medicare now but the Oregon Health Plan saved my life. When I retired, my COBRA plan was $1282 a month. There was no way. That and rent was my income. This country is fighting national health insurance tooth and nail but it is going to happen.
I’ll be pissed if Massachusetts has sat on there ass long enough for that to happen considering that the bill for the damn system has been in the statehouse every congress and has won in every non-binding ballot initiative (essentially an official public poll of the electorate to gauge actual voter support) in the districts where it has been on the ballot.
West coast universal healthcare pact then build a wall. Fuck those red states.
