>Premier Doug Ford is weighing in after an Ontario man was arrested in connection with the assault of an intruder earlier this week, telling reporters that “something is broken” when you can’t “protect your family.”
The incident happened at around 3 a.m. on Monday at an apartment on Kent Street in Lindsay, Ont., which is roughly 43 kilometres west of Peterborough. Police said a 44-year-old man was asleep when he awoke to find an intruder inside his unit.
An altercation ensued, which resulted in the suspect sustaining serious, life-threatening injuries, they said.
The resident was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, while the intruder, a 41-year-old man also from Lindsay, was charged with four offences, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and break-and-enter.
“I know someone breaks into my house, or someone else’s, you’re going to fight, for your life,” Ford said during an unrelated press conference in Hamilton on Wednesday.
“You’re going to use any force you possibly can, to protect your family. I’m telling you, I know everyone would.”
Yes yes. Very unfair. We all must scream out in outrage at such injustice (without having all the facts or acknowledging that being charged doesn’t mean convicted).
I guess we only support the decisions of law enforcement officers when those decisions align with our political ideology.

Agree or disagree, as a politician, it’s not your job to speak about charges laid against someone, when the full story is not known.
If he wants to weigh in, he can do so as a private citizen, just like everyone else has been.
Him opening his gob could lead to a miscarriage of justice. If he doesn’t have enough self awareness that a premier should be impartial, then he doesn’t have the ability to be a politician.
Ford’s success over the past several years has proven that Ontarians are very susceptible to populism and emotionally-charged reactionary politics.
I remember learning in Business Law class about how you can be charged for attacking an intruder. Or even if they twist their ankle in your home, they can sue you and win, even though they were there to commit a crime. Everyone in class always considers that such an unfair result of a crime done to you. Public reaction to it, it’s natural to be upset about that.
Anyways, this is why conservatives are winning on messaging when it comes to crime and safety in this country. Not everyone is a lawyer. Not everyone understands the nuances of laws and court decisions. Not an easy sell to change minds either. And conservatives are taking advantage of people’s reactions to blame the unfair law on Liberals somehow.
It happened to Trudeau. Poilievre being back will try to blame crime on Carney. The Liberals need to focus on crime and safety legislation when Parliament resumes to reassure Canadians before the messaging gets out of control.

– Sounds like the perp had an unfortunate accident while the resident kindly assisted him out of his residence.
