Russia’s Nuclear-Powered Battlecruiser Admiral Nakhimov Returns to Sea After Nearly Three Decades
Russia’s Admiral Nakhimov, a 251-meter-long nuclear-powered battlecruiser, has embarked on its first sea trials since 1997.
Assisted by tugs, the ship departed from the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk on August 18, 2025, marking a significant milestone after years of extensive modernization.
Originally commissioned in the mid-1980s, the Admiral Nakhimov underwent a comprehensive upgrade, including the replacement of its nuclear fuel elements and the overhaul of its reactors.
The vessel is now equipped with advanced weaponry, such as the Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile, enhancing its strategic capabilities.
This modernization positions the Admiral Nakhimov to become the flagship of Russia’s Northern Fleet, potentially replacing the Pyotr Velikiy, which has been inactive since 2022 and is expected to be decommissioned.
The sea trials are scheduled to continue in the Barents Sea, with the aim of officially reintroducing the battlecruiser into active service following successful evaluations.

First thought: impressive engineering. Second thought: that’s a floating Chernobyl with missiles strapped to it. Hard to see this as anything but a flex.

Hmm… This cannot be done in order to affect the war in Ukraine. Too complicated and inefficient. I mean, can you imagine sailing that thing all around Europe, through Gibraltar, bribing Erdogan to let you violate the Treaty of Montreaux so you can move it through the Dardanelles and the Bosporus, only for it to be sunk within dayxs of getting to the Black Sea by some Ukrainian cruise missile, just like the Moskva?
That would be rather frustrating I would say.
Since that won’t happen (the reassignment to the Black Sea, not the sinking), I guess this is just saber rattling and grandstanding.

A worthy replacement for Admiral Kuznetsov that only ramped up costs over time and drained Putin’s war chest 👌

Are we supposed to terrified because of the word ’nuclear‘?

So one has to ask, how safe are these nuclear cores when a ship with them is sunk? Like do they continuously leach material into the water? Do they violently explode in a sub atomic blast? What happens?

The noteworthy thing is not that a nuclear-powered cruiser is on the move – the noteworthy thing is that it still functions.

Would be nice if the ship can be made into permanent submarine like Moskva.
It is a big ship but it is also one of the oldest ship in Russian navy with leisurely 18 years in the dock for „modernization“.

Why are they refitting this? It’s 40 years old.
If they can’t build new ones maybe buy from China instead of resurrecting relics?

Might be a silly question, but does anyone know how dangerous these reactors are sitting on the bottom of the ocean?

Did they make sure the front was securely attached before setting sail? Because it would be a shame if it fell off (not).

I wouldn’t be surprised with the “upgrades”, they have made the vessel top heavy and prone to capsizing.

For those that are saying, If Ukraine managed to sink it that would be some feat considering this sailed out of dock in the White Sea that leads into the Barents Sea. Think up top of Russia, arctic circle way.

I am a big fan of the russian navy.
In an actual war with NATO it would be sunk in a day and in the mean time it functions as a ”global power” prestige project that drains money from actual military problems. Not to mention it means less money to spend on their brutal, dishonest war of aggression against Ukraine.
