He went on to say that he saw it in theatres, and as soon as he saw how they constructed the environment, etc – he said “yep, now I get it, rats”. Something to that effect.
It’s a building that turns into a robot. What’s fun about playing with a building?
Makes sense. Oldman was drinking A LOT at the time from I remember. And to be fair, Burton is an incredibly visual director with way less clout under him at the time. The entire story behind the making of Beetlejuice is a few people getting it, like the producer and Burton, and a lot of people not getting it but getting on board anyway like O’hara and Keaton. And then there’s Alec Baldwin, who didn’t get the movie till he actually saw it, and had been bad mouthing it in the press because he was sure it was gonna suck and wanted to cushion his own career from it.
