The way I see it, it’s not really an oligopoly, but more that our aviation market is restricted by our geographical situation.
In Canada, we have the following Canadian operating airlines which already compete with each other in different areas/markets:
* Air Canada
* WestJet
* Porter Airlines
* Air Transat
* Plus a multitude of other smaller companies (Sunwest, Air Inuit, Flair, etc.)
Every time a new airline arrives and tries to enter the market, it realizes how sparse Canada’s population is and how difficult it is to survive as an airline in Canada considering the large distance and the low population.
I mean, we’re only 40 million people in the second biggest country of the world (by superficies)!
We’re essentially the same population as the state of California (which is smaller than the province of Alberta)!
Anyone should look at the population density and where it is located in Canada, we have more than enough airline companies and I’m not sure I would qualify that as an oligopoly considering our market.
I consider the cellphone/communication companies in Canada as an oligopoly alright but Canadian civil aviation? Nah, not really.
