If I was surveyed on this, I’d consider the constant, patronising claims of „call volume is higher than normal…“ as poor customer service.
Followed by 5 seconds of music, which is interrupted with a pause just long enough to make you think someone has answered, then the same nonsense about high call volumes again.

I think some people can’t tell the difference between poor customer service and not getting what they want. Like anyone who’s worked in a call centre I sometimes got bad reviews because I couldn’t give the customer what they were asking for, not because I’d done anything wrong.

It’s hard to know if this is services just getting worse or customers just getting more demanding or a mix of both. I’ve definitely seen some shocking levels of entitlement out and about from the public.

I mean that’s about as vague as you can get. What’s poor service, a restaurant taking slightly too long with your meal or your insurance denying a perfectly valid claim? Those are two very different levels of poor with very different ramifications and legal avenues.

I’m fed up of buying electrical gadgets that break one day after warranty
The commercial store tells me to go to the manufacturer
The manufacturer obviously shelves the model and releases a new one just before warranties expire
The manufacturer charge the 75% cost of a new model to repair
Anyone I speak to at the commercial store or manufacturer diverts me to an Indian customer service rep who can’t solve the problem
I’m more tempted to buy a Chinese knock off that will explode but I’d still get better value for money

A lot of the customer service I’ve found has been passed onto India the home of scamming, so it’s incredibly hard to trust, understand and poor.

The people that work in the U.K. have shitty jobs and are underpaid, the ones that are outsourced don’t care and are the call centres for fifty different companies, that and since the invention of social media, you can give the best customer service in the world but if the „customer“ doesn’t get what they want, they’re going to post you all over it anyway, so it’s very much a doing the bare minimum to get by until a better job comes along kind of role.

I am shocked that it is just „almost half“. I travel a lot (both UK and abroad) so I interact with a lot of different companies and I find customer service is far worse post pandemic than it was before that.
Recently had a hotel booking platform tell me that I wouldn’t be entitled to a refund in the scenario where I turn up at the hotel and find it has been closed down and placed under receivership. Luckily in my case I was due to pay on arrival.

There are 2 types of companies.
1. Those that are now hiding their contact numbers on their websites, removing contact forms, understaffing any call centres they have and instead pushing you to use AI chatbots that do not have the power to solve any issues and instead run you round in circles until you give up, or if you are lucky they then ‚allow‘ you to speak to a human.
2. Companies that have invested in their call centres, empower staff and have systems where you start the process and they call you (such as EE) meaning you are not left waiting and do not have to suffer through levels of nonsense trying to speak to the right person.
The companies who are included in 1. have always tried their best to not support the customer and AI is just their current scam. Outsourcing to India, making you write in, charging you for the call etc…

We need to start a website that reviews companies solely on factors such as:
– easy to find phone number on website
– easy to speak to a human being
– easy to understand said human being
– time spent on chatbot before being presented with option to speak to human being

Retail is terrible for customer service, I said in another thread the other day about how in the 90s there was multiple shop employees and if you had nothing to do you just pottered around, so work not only paired fairly but it was less demanding. There was always staff knocking about to ask for help, there was dedicated staff for tills, stock, customer service, fitting rooms and warehousing. Now one person is expected to be able to cover all of those roles as and when.
Switch to now, and staff have been cut to the bone, you have a bank of 8 tills but at no point will there ever be 8 staff to man them, you’ll get 3 at most. Fitting rooms are often closed early as there’s no staff to operate them. The concept of a customer service desk doesn’t really exist outside of the huge department stores like Selfridges or places like Ikea.
The number of times I’ve been in a shop and there’s a queue waiting to be served with one till staff on but there’s other staff busy fannying around that are happy to ignore the queue because their current task is to mark things down or tidy the rails. I have a small business and I tell my staff that I don’t want people queuing, even if there’s only one person in the queue, if you see them it’s just good customer service to acknowledge them and jump on to serve.

Banking is a case in point. Let’s close all the banks because then we don’t have to pay staff or maintain/run the building . Let’s make everyone use a shitty app because then we don’t have to pay staff. Let’s use AI for contact because then we don’t have to pay staff.
Customer Service is dead. Too expensive. Are you listening Barclays? Never seen or heard such a shit show in my life.
