A child is much more likely to be struck in the head and upper body (including vital organs) than the legs. Adult pedestrians in crashes suffer similar impacts, though the risk of death, while higher, is not as disturbing as that for children.
I cannot imagine there are many people driving these giant land fortresses that are unaware of this fact. I think it is far more likely that they just do not care if they are more likely to kill the person they hit whether they’re on a bicycle, an 8 year old, or someone driving a small hatchback.
I dunno if it’s just me, but I find the modern, gargantuan pickup trucks are fugly, and get uglier the bigger they get. They look goofy.
It’s especially frustrating when they’re in the left/middle lane and slowly roll out into the intersection (on red) while I’m trying to make a right on red in my sedan.
Nice buddy you saved 15 ms being a few feet ahead, now I have to make a blind right turn or wait while the person behind me (also in a road tank) gets bitchy because he doesn’t realise not all of us are 2 m off the ground in our ugly Ford F7000 toddler masher.
Bonus points if I’m being blinded because the other pickup truck across the road has nuclear powered hi-beams frying my eyes.
I wonder how that compares to damage from the station wagons and other 1960-80 land yachts with the 7-8 foot hoods?
