    1. > “Our return allows us to build the legal record necessary to defeat this racist map in court,” said State Representative Gene Wu, a Houston Democrat who led the walkout.

      I sure hope so

    2. Greg Abbott ruining Texas, and our Democracy.

I’m sure the good folks of Texas have some words for you…

California, New York, Illinois, Maryland, Washington.. Texas democrats have failed so you know what to do.

    4. Lunchb0xx87 on

yeah cool they got other states to talk about it and plan votes .. none of that his set in stone while texas will push this through on their own since they dont answer to the voters

    5. This title implies that the map has passed, but it hasn’t. They will need to call a second special season, then get votes again. They’ll probably do that, but have not yet.

    6. Why can’t all blue states gerrymander the hell out of itself? If it’s deemed unconstitutional then all red states would have to follow suit? Am I wrong in that assessment?

    7. Gerrymandered districts are great until you have a wave election and those R+10 districts start to fall. The only way to fix gerrymandering is to punish them on election day.

This whole thing is a great PSA for independent redistricting. Wouldn’t it be nice if the districts could choose their representative instead of the other way around?

    9. Trump trying to steal the election. He is a moron but a genius when it comes to his survival.

Pretty sure this whole business was to buy time for other states to react, but this is such horse shit. We shouldn’t be redrawing in the first place

    11. Meanwhile you have that little bitch Speakwr Johnson he will do everything to stop Californias power grab; but won’t do anything Texas‘? California and all blue states should follow suit and gerrymander the fuck out of their states to blow up the republicans chances of ever becoming the majority again. Fuck the GOP pedo party.

I am very anti-gun, but our best bet going forward is for every liberal to arm themselves. Even if you don’t want a gun, get a baseball bat.

    13. Texas admitted openly they’re going to gerrymander their state to ensure the GOP maintains the house.

This country is so fucking broken they don’t even think they need to lie about why their gerrymandering anymore 😂

    14. >The proposed map, which could be passed quickly this week, was designed to help Republicans keep control of the U.S. House by redrawing five districts to swing from Democratic to Republican control in 2026.

      >Republicans said in public hearings that their goals were partisan; Democrats argued that the new map would illegally disempower Black and Hispanic voting populations, in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

As a non-lawyer, it seems to me like Republicans are poised to win this case in front of the Supreme Court if these are the sorts of arguments each side presents. SCOTUS has already said partisan gerrymandering is perfectly fine.

And if you think that the Roberts court is going to be swayed by any arguments that depend on the Voting Rights Act, then you might be underestimating its hostility to the VRA.

The article mentions that Republicans argue that their redraw is partisan. In an interview with one of the republican party leaders in TX, he says “several hispanic areas” and explicitly states it’s based on race.

This is illegal and there is recorded proof of it if the dems use their brains.

“We have 3 hispanic districts we can carve out”

Love how this is framed like it’s STILL the democrats fault that the GOP is pulling this bullshit.

    17. This whole effort by Texas Dems was never going to stop Abbott indefinitely. The map was going to always be redrawn. What this was about was giving other blue states time to rally to counter Texas. The Texas Dems did all they could, it’s on the rest of us now to do our part with the time they gave us.

      Hi folks.

This is a civil war. It’s a cold war. There’s no shooting. But it is VERY clear this is a war that that will determine the political landscape in the US for generations, and could literally result in states officially being for Republicans or Democrats, or whatever the parties evolve into after this.

    19. This is „legal“ corruption of the government, of our country, by the SCOTUS and Republicans.

It is direct disenfranchisement of citizens and enshrines politicians not having to worry about their constituents.

People should matter and votes should matter. Politicians should not be able to nearly permanently hold a position and not focus on their constituents.

    20. Soft-Confidence-4831 on

EXTREMELY misleading headline. The maps haven’t passed yet. The democratic reps are back, and they plan to leave again if the maps are brought back. Absolutely scummy headline.
