I don’t know…maybe? But there is not exactly a lot of loose change lying around to facilate giving criminals more pocket money. And it’s not exactly „issue if the day“ or what the folks talk about around the kitchen table and something that is impacting their own quality of life
I mean, both? Getting training and being allowed to work are important aspects of rehabilitative justice, but their labour is absolutely being exploited. You can end the exploitation without ending rehabilitation programs.
Meanwhile we have law abiding people unemployed and unable to get work.
Prisoners should not be getting this work.
My dad worked in corrections for 40 years. The inmates don’t care about the pay or the work they just want to be outside. It’s also a „good behaviour“ carrot for the guards.
There’s a lot of good information and context within the article. I was going to quote stuff, but ended up grabbing way too much. I recommend everyone read it. From a rehabilitation and recidivism perspective, there’s a strong argument underpaying them doesn’t provide much value. Even if you don’t care about them at all, or labour generally, lowering recidivism rates also lowers costs. If paying an inmate a fair wage to do the work prevents them from reoffending then we still save money overall.
This is a pretty cut and dry case of labour exploitation. It also does fit the description of modern day slavery. This really isn’t anything different than how the TFW program is used to exploit workers and depress wages.
They actually earn much more than $7 a day. We should not forget that the prison supplies them with food, clothes, a bed, electricity, water, and (when needed) medicine.
It is good that they contribute to covering the costs of their imprisonment, because tax payers do not want taxes to go up to cover the costs of prisons.
If anything, we should be cutting free lunches and eliminating hand outs at all levels of society. Redistribution infringes on personal liberty. Everyone should pay their own way.
