It would feel weird to vote in another country’s election when they have no power here. I don’t know enough about Irish parties, but who would be similar or equivalent to Alliance/Lib Dems down south?

They are entitled to Irish citizenship if they want it. If they take it then they can vote.

Yes, but it does raise the question of Dáil elections. Should Irish citizens in the north not also be allowed to vote on national policy and party elections?
The hypothetical delegates from this type of election wouldn’t have any practical power to implement laws north of the border of course, but it only seems fair folks up north get a vote on national politics, the same way that they get a vote in Westminster elections.
So that’s the presidency going to Sinn Féin for eternity. I’m in favour of people from the north running, but the president of Ireland is the president of the republic. We relinquished sovereignty over the 6 counties with the Good Friday Agreement. Hence why we have separate elections on everything else.
Irish citizens on the island of Ireland should absolutely get a vote for the President.

As far as I’m concerned the only people who should ever be allowed to vote in an election are people who are ordinarily resident in Ireland.
Obvious exceptions to that are reasonable such as DF, Gardai and civil servants who are required to stay overseas for extended periods of time, but if you don’t fall into categories like that, then you don’t vote.
Absolutely. As soon as we can vote for the King of Northern Ireland I’m all in.
I don’t agree with this on a theoretical level. The president is there to uphold the constitution, and as a result only those subject to the constitution should get a vote. Imagine we had a president who created a constitutional crises, but who wouldn’t have been elected by those governed by said constitution, but only those who aren’t subject to that constitution.
However, in reality, if this were to happen, as long as it would only extend to those in the North, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it
