Anchorage – Three hours of negotiations – and at the end, twelve minutes of empty words!

The world held its breath when US President Donald Trump (79) met with Vladimir Putin (72) at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. At first, Trump wanted to impress the Kremlin leader with a martial display: fighter jets in the air and on the ground, accompanied by a meticulously choreographed (warm) greeting. Then the presidents withdrew for negotiations.

In the minutes before the press conference, tension hung in the air: Had Trump succeeded in extracting a ceasefire from the warmonger in the Ukraine war? He had boldly declared during the approach on Air Force One that he would not settle for anything less.

But Putin, who spoke first, dashed hopes. His war against Ukraine continues. Then came lengthy statements. Putin read from a note, Trump spoke freely. The common thread: no details, no agreements! And above all: three and a half years after the start of Russia’s invasion, no ceasefire in Ukraine!

In his carefully prepared statement, Putin sought to highlight commonalities between Russia and the United States and hoped for opportunities for future cooperation. On the key issue of the war in Ukraine, he made vague allusions to an „agreement.“ Europe should „not torpedo“ this progress, Putin warned. He did not provide details.

Trump echoed the sentiment, grinning slightly painedly. The summit was „extremely productive,“ the Republican said, and they agreed on „many points.“ But, according to Trump, some remain open. Among them is the „most significant“…

What was striking at this point was that Trump didn’t announce the hoped-for ceasefire, choosing different phrasing. „We haven’t reached our goal there.“ The US president could barely hide his disappointment.

Trump in FOX interview: “We are negotiating…”
Following his conversation with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump met with FOX host Sean Hannity. The interview aired shortly after departure. Here, too, Trump didn’t commit to specifics, but repeated general statements: „A war is a war, no matter where. Lives are at stake. I see a way to end the war.“ Asked about security guarantees for Ukraine, he remained tight-lipped: „We’re negotiating that.“ He described the conversation, the outcome of which both presidents remain silent on, as a „cordial meeting between two important countries.“ Hannity asked about Trump’s advice to Ukrainian President Zelensky (and to Putin): „Make a deal. This war should never have started.“

He would promptly inform European allies and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (47) about the conversation. Both left the door open for another summit. „Next time in Moscow,“ Putin said in English. A rare relaxed moment in a rather tense atmosphere. „Oh, that’s an interesting suggestion,“ Trump replied, slightly embarrassed. „I could get into trouble for that—but I see a possibility of it happening.“

Afterward, no reporter questions were allowed. Both quickly left. What remained was a worldwide guess as to what was actually discussed or even agreed upon    

This seems to have gone better for america then we thought it would.

Trump didn’t sell any country for magic beans and promises which was certainly a plus. I sort of think most of the press corp had written stories assuming trump would give putin Alaska or abandon nato or something like that. Because the headlines seem way harsher then what was actually said.

Trump didnt get a deal, he had a deliberate show of force to putin, he made putin come to him, he apparently delivered a letter demanding the return of Ukrainian kidnapped children. Nothing really substantial happened.

The most surprising thing is really that trump didnt get fooled the 7th time…
