We should build these things in Canada, but it makes no sense for a private company to do this. There will never be space for more than one Canadian subway car builder so there are no benefits for private sector competition.

The UTDC Crown Corporation that used to build Ontario’s streetcars and subways was privatized in the 1980s because the gov’t run corporation was found to be slow and inefficient.

Guess what? Over the decades of private ownership deliveries were even slower and more expensive than when it had been publicly run.

There is absolutely zero chance our government could stand up a modern train manufacturing corp and come close to competing with an established firm.

This is clearly in response to the bad optics from BC ferries contract. Is it logical to source domestically? Probably not.
