There's a growing campaign to replace the use of the Mercator map by governments and international bodies with one that more accurately reflects countries' true sizes.

I would be really interested to know if anyone has published a study on the actual effect of the Mercator map’s distortion. Has Brazil been on the losing side of ‚my country is bigger than yours‘ contests with Greenland?
I think most people wont even notice or care. I support it. Its nice to see a true representation, but it hasn’t made any difference to anything.
I am surprised to see how common Mercator is in other countries
In my western European experience, I very rarely see it anywhere, as the standard here is the Plate carrée
Sure, it doesn’t have perfect size conservation, the poles still are bigger unlike in the Gall Peters, and it also doesn’t have the correct shape and angles of the Mercator
But it is the mid point between the two, and it seems to be the simplest and best one
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Mercator in the wild

I always thought mercator could only make things bigger, not smaller. That things were true to sizr at the equator and bigger the farther away from it.
The West Wing did a similar take on this years ago
Any campaign from the World bank or ‚UN bodies‘ can be safely ignored, as these entities have near zero significance.
Everyone has seen a spherical globe of the Earth where everything is represented with its correct size. Zillions of instances of that exist in every school and in most homes. The actual area of each country is a Google search away. That’s not a secret, there is no conspiracy to make Africa less significant.
We need to represent the Earth on a 2D surface for practical purposes, and the Mercator map is the established way to do it. There are no losers or winners.
Compromise – we rotate the map 90 degrees along the equatorial axis so Africa is at the pole and looks enormous.
The Mercator map isn’t an imperialist project to shrink the size of equatorial countries or anything. It is however an imperialist project to improve navigation for ships.
The Waterman Butterfly Projection is the only one worth using.
