    1. Hi r/politics, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that his state would hold a special election Nov. 4 to ask voters to approve a mid-decade redistricting plan.

Newsom made the announcement after criticizing President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans for [intending to redraw](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/08/04/texas-redistricting-map-congress-trump-takeaways/85508969007/) that state’s congressional map ahead of the 2026 elections to create more Republican-leaning congressional districts. Redistricting efforts are also ongoing in Florida and Ohio that could benefit Republicans. Indiana and Missouri are also Republican-controlled states discussing redistricting.

    2. Loving the fight from Gavin Newsom! Take the fight to Trump and his gang of fascists.

Keep this up and maybe we get President Newsom in next election!

Is this really the elected official that gives the democrats fire to not be intimidated?

Thank you California. New York needs to step up (I’m aware of the difficulties – find a way), as do other blue states. This is an existential struggle for to stop an authoritarian takeover.

    5. To the lady criticizing it, double dog dare you to call a special election in TX.

They don’t believe in letting voters decide in TX.

    6. I’ve done the math. the Dems will add 7,000 democrats to Congress. there will never be a GOP majority ever.

    7. Let’s fucking go! Fighting fire with fire. They’ve been playing dirty for decades which is what got us into this mess to begin with. About time the Democrats join in

He’s got balls unlike the other blue state leaders. Unless others follow suit, the Bible thumping republicans will steal this country for generations to come. It’s wishful thinking considering how more than half of the country supports the GOP. Maybe what needs to happen is for their freedom and liberty to be taken away before they value those things. But I hope it doesn’t come down to that.

    9. I love that this all started with the Texas Republicans thinking they were hot shit and not realizing other blue states could do what they wanted to do, but better.

This will lead to the abolition of the electoral college and or the suscesion of states.

Scorched earth, bitches. Other states need to take note and follow suit.

    12. We are at the point where state Governors are having to send messages over the Internet at a reading level and style the President of the United States can comprehend. This is so pathetic.

If this was combined with ranked-choice voting it actually would help democracy rather than be a Sophie’s Choice of weakening democracy to save it (maybe).
