If only they could build suitable housing on their property for students to relocate and work for a good wage for the summer.
LOTS of University students are willing to relocate for good pay. If they have no problems filling the resort with patrons maybe a small increase in costs will help them cover the costs of providing housing and good working conditions.
In my time at University it was Tree Planting that was the big thing, you could make 4x minimum wage working a remote tree planting job for 4 months. Was good money and people raced to get those jobs.
Advertise the job at $x.xx per hour. If no one applies advertise it at $x.00 + $1.00 per hour. Increase the $/hour until you fill your positions. That is when the labour market has decided that you are paying a fair wage for the position.
If you cannot make your business work at the new wage level then you either have to charge more for your services, or decide that the business is not economically viable.
No where in the above do temporary foreign workers enter into the equation. Unemployed Canadians are ready and willing to fill the positions provided that they are adequately compensated.
That is not to say that there are not circumstances where TFWs are needed, basic housekeeping and labour are not the circumstances.
So basically: *“We run a luxury fishing resort in the middle of nowhere. We don’t have enough workers to serve all the customers lining up to throw money at us. But instead of raising prices a hair to attract more workers with decent pay, housing and guaranteed hours, we’ll just whine to the government that we can’t import cheaper labour anymore.”*
Too bad. That’s capitalism. Hire people at competitive rates, and the applications will flow. It’s not a race to the bottom.
„This Ontario resort can’t find enough employees because they aren’t paying well enough.“
The second sentence is unnecessary.
