Game development was huge when I was going to college about 10-12 years ago, The problem at the time was job prospects out of it were slim.
Oh wow !! was on the fence buying the game but if an Irish company made it I def will now !
Completely agree, the government do fuck all to support game studios vs how they bend over backwards for other kinds of tech company. I work for Larian Studios, we’ve made our best efforts over the years to get some momentum from the government to inventivise studios and devs to move here as well as to encourage educational institutions to offer courses in game design but unfortunately not had much success. That’s even after we produced a GOTY title (and should be noted Larian Dublin is one of the main development studios, unlike studios like Riot who mainly cater to non dev teams).
One that still really pisses me off is the largest games industry conference in Europe (Gamescom, Cologne) has no official representatives from Ireland.
Ukraine, a country in the midst of a full scale war does….let that sink in. Even Quebec has it’s own alongside Canada itself.
It’s a huge blindspot for Enterprise Ireland and something I’ve made my own efforts to try and get moving but had no luck.
Other tech jobs and industries are much more stable than games and they rightly are prioritised more. One swallow doesn’t make a summer.
I heard this team is basically non-existent in Ireland, someone on LinkedIn pointed out they had like 1 or 2 people here to register the company, and most of the development team is in New Zealand.
That doesn’t exactly sound like an Irish company to me. But, hey, they made a lot of good points, and if they’re thinking of expanding here, I’m all for it.
It’s been failing for years to support for years. I remember before getting elected Paschal O’ Donohoe was aligning himself as “the minister for games” and turning up at games industry events, saying how the industry could become massive and all these support etc etc etc.
He gets elected and has been in government since and I haven’t heard a peep about the supports and tax breaks etc. he went on about at lunches all those years ago.
Ireland gov be like “video games? Aren’t those for kids? We want kids out in the fresh air why would we support that”
