Isn’t it extremely difficult to find a correlation between these units?
Losing the sugarbeet industry was probably no help. Coal, turf etc in decline too I expect
Better motorways from about 2007, some freight has moved to road, I suppose.
Local question becomes, if freight is in decline, and they would be operating on the same tracks, why aren’t we just converting them to passenger routes, even if they are regional, etc
Jump in passenger rail is coz I got a girlfriend from Laois
You can see a step in 2002 when the ammonia trains stopped running. I wonder what the big drop in 2005/06 was.
I wonder what happened in 2020
Be interested to see this in comparison to pre 1950s rail usage as well. The rail network was once larger than it is today.
Starting the left y axis and 0 and the right one and 800,000 is misleading. In reality, rail freight really has dropped off to close to zero (which is crazy), but passenger traffic „only“ dropped off by two thirds during the pandemic.
Normalizing the data to a max-min range to highlight differences in trend is fine, but you need to make it explicitly clear that you’re doing that to the viewer in the title or in a caption of some kind.
