Funny how ’small government‘ folks are fine with taking over a whole city when it suits them.

    2. One can dream but the GOP would never let this happen, as it would dilute their power in congress. We saw the games they pulled when it came to a SCOTUS seat, 2 senators and a rep? „Fuggedaboudit“.

This is why i think our govt is in decline, Im not saying a collapse or division will happen in 5 or 10 years it may be decades away, but theres a structural inability to really get impactful change done. I recently saw someone say „we couldnt pass an amendent to declare the sky is blue“, no matter what is best for the country our political parties look at it as too much of a zero sum game, its sad but i genuinely believe some politicians would be ok seeing our country suffer in some way if they perceived the solution as somehow benefitting the other party.

    3. Did the mayor say anything about how Donald Trump admitted that he liked to walk into underage girls dressing rooms while they were naked?

I’m just sitting here waiting for them to jail Mayor Bowser for „noncompliance“ or some bullshit.

    5. Denying statehood and the Congressional representation that comes with it to the many people of Washington DC because of something as arbitrary as lines is the pinnacle of second-class citizenry, and antithetical to the entire idea of a representative government.

DC must be a state – prior to this administration my motivations for support were founded in voting access and proper representation and true equality between DC residents and all other US citizens. I never expected that in a single decade I would raise ‚the protections afforded a state against federal incompetence and overreach‘ to the top of the list, and yet here we are.

The people of DC are, by definition, oppressed by their own government.

Trump should do it. At least he’d go down in the history books for something good

I think I’m finally figuring out this administration’s obsession with a „51st state“.

Create a new state, use the military to drive out all the minorities and poor people, then gerrymander the piss out of it for more votes.

Anyone who says desperate evil can’t be creative when they need to be, doesn’t know what they’re talking about!

Kinda insane since DC has been wanting to be their own state for a LONG time.

It just the mayor. This random nurse here in SE Minnesota thinks so too.

    10. This just proves they need independence to prevent tyrannical oppression.

Retrocede the non-federal property to Maryland and get permanent residents a voting US House Rep. and the 2 senators.

Puerto Rico just died so they can roll in their grave reading this.

Let’s add DC and Puerto Rico and a supreme court justice of their choice.

the 51st state would either be Guam or Puerto Rico, and both of them rightly deserve it. D.C. will never be a state, for reasons going back to the founding fathers. However, what D.C. needs is proper representation and internal governing structures. Right now it’s a fubar mess where they can’t even properly manage themselves because they aren’t part of any state.

Even better, let’s do away with the Electoral College and redraw all US Representative Districts away from the gerrymandered mess they are. Fairly well any method of setting them up from scratch would be fairer than we have now … Something along the lines of maximizing uniformity of squareish shape with relatively equal population … frankly, even if that ends up bisecting population centers. Take ALL the politics out of creating legislative districts.

The right will never allow new states when they are in the middle of trying to permanently take over the country.

DC and Puerto Rico should be states. They pay taxes, are US citizens and don’t have an equal voice in our government.

Finally, someone is saying it. This is the way. Next, Puerto Rico. And when we take back the White House, expand the SCOTUS.

And then they sell Alaska to the Russians and we keep 50 dates of course

    20. I_Cogs_Well on

Just merge the dakotas the make DC the 50th state, don’t even have to change the flag

    21. blackmobius on

And just like canada, how many of those voters would be democrats or republicans?

The jokes about canada being the 51st state stopped dead overnight when they realized that a country thats as populated as cali, all pissed at trump, would add ~40 house seats that would all be anti trump and anti gop for the foreseeable future. Nearly every state more populated than kentucky would lose a seat (or several) and all those seats would be solid blue for a few decades, at best.

But sure, make dc a 51st state, buddy. See how that ones goes

    22. DC (and Porto Rico for that matter) will never become States, for 2 reasons.

      1. Stupidity – 50 is a round number and going past 50 will completely confuse a large number of people.
      2. Racism – there are a lot of non-white people and they don’t get to have representation (look at how much they talked about making White Canada a state)

    23. ClassOptimal7655 on

As a Canadian, yes, PLEASE turn your 51st state nonsense inward. Maybe even consider giving Puerto Rican the right to vote?

You know freedom and democracy and whatnot….?

    24. Didn’t they vote for exactly this and congress just ignores them?
      (Like Puerto Rico did)
