      So what exactly is India’s option?

      Option 1, American ally: Be Europe and get told what to do, be dependent for security and trade unfavourable deals and yet have tariffs? Japan? Not that different.

      Option 2, Chinese ally: be Pakistan and be a backrupt near serf? Trade international influence for domestic instability?

      There are no good options here, India will court both because it has to and given the size few countries who can hope to stand on its own if it can find some time to gain the kind of leverage that can insulate it from whims of foreign powers.

      Until two weeks ago, it worked just fine. In two more months India would have adjusted course.

      Indias goal is not to gain a permanent West or east camp to ally with. It seeks time enough to be a camp of its own.

      As an Indian reading NYT is a treason. I have one year NYT subscription but I am not renewing it. While I am a liberal I can’t handle NYT negativity towards India. And it is not a recent thing. There old articles are very negative towards India sometimes very racist too.

      I think they will be fine once the Trump-Putin summit happens. I think Trump was just bullying India to apply pressure on Putin.

      India’s aspiration on the subcontinent and Indian ocean will eventually bring it into conflict with an hegemonic power like US. To add to it, the spectre of 7th fleet in Bengal still looms large. Any attempt by the US to insert itself into India/Pakistan feud would be viewed with suspension. Alliances is never something India sort or needed, instead it look to balance the relation between its neighbours, partners and strategic competitors. India benefit the most in a multipolar world so its focus is on positioning itself when it comes to pass.
