80 lashes each is a substantial sentence. It’s life-threatening unless done in multiple sittings. That’s really fucked up.

My understanding of the judgement is the judge showed leniency by reducing the 85 lashes to 80 since they were polite and good students. The judge then allowed an additional 4 lashes to be removed as they had served 4 months detainment.

In Aceh, which is under Sharia law, basically a mini Taliban state. Most of the country isn’t like this, though some people are trying to make it like this.

Why are ppl so programmed to automatically get defensive when it comes to Islam? Anytime you hear something like this, ppl go “well in Christianity and Judaism…” Or if someone brings up “grooming” gangs, it’s “are you saying there aren’t white gangs?” Ppl comparing Trump’s America to an Islamic court?
I hear a lot of “well it’s their culture” but that attitude just gives cover for ppl who perpetuate abuse while ignoring those who have to suffer under it like women, girls, gays, or ppl who say the wrong thing.

The most chilling part: „Prosecutors previously sought 85 strokes of the cane for each, but the three-judge panel decided on what they described as lenient punishment because the men were outstanding students who were polite in court, cooperated with authorities and had no previous convictions.“
