I don’t get why the legal system doesn’t just fine the ever living shit out of their parents if they can’t lock the kids up

    2. Old man shouting at cloud/wasn’t like that in my day phase seems to have hit you extraordinarily early young man.

    3. Pointlessillism on

The overwhelming majority of Irish teenagers are nothing like this. In fact they are these shitheads’ primary victims (bullying, theft, assaults etc etc)

    4. ChangeOk7752 on

The parents of these kids aren’t on Reddit. They don’t even know where their kids are or care about what they’re doing and if you retaliate you’re the problem. But I agree. And if their parents aren’t going to do anything the government need
To take action because it can’t continue.

    5. Grogman2024 on

For anyone reading this, you might think your child is an angel and would never get up to shit but believe me literally anyone can act nice at home

    6. If parents can’t control their kids, young adults could step in as well. Back in my day, the older crowd would sort you out real quick if you misbehaved.

    7. GelacticGuru on

Controversial take- a parent can only do so much and at some point there needs to be some accountability. We are all responsible for our actions, and these youths know exactly what they are doing.

    8. MySweatyMoobs on

Said it before, scum rasing scum, that will go on to raise more scum. Some families are just conveyor belts of scum that will never contribute anything remotely positive to society.

    9. The soft touch societal approach over the past 2 decades is now paying dividends (/s) and we are on a slippery slope like our neighbours next door.

Any adult who even dares to call out the “little angels” on their obnoxious behaviour has their “fabulous parents” to deal with. The lack of respect for the wider community clearly begins at home.

The parents maybe certainly legally responsible till their kids are 18 and kids between 13-18 can be taken to task by the Gardai but when was that ever enforced? The courts aren’t of much help either.

I say this as a 35 year old man,
Grow up and get over yourself.

If you have a problem, address it.

Reddit won’t fix it for you.

Edit: I should note that I don’t address every problem I encounter day to day, because I am fallible – but going one Reddit to say that kids are vaping in my presence is unfathomable.

    11. There has always been poxy parents, there has always been poxy teenagers. Social media has made this kind of „look“ cooler and spread to kids that wouldn’t usually act this way.

If your saying kids are worse now than in the 80s and 90s I’m afraid your very wrong just far more annoying because you see the shite on your phone as well as real life.

    12. The problem is, while nobody admits it for some reason, you are guys are too soft on your kids.

    13. Smooth_Twist_1975 on

That’s a pretty wild generalisation. This stereotype represents a relatively small percentage of Irish teenagers.

    14. I don’t get why you say it’s generational, the same
scrotes were around 10, 20, 30 years ago!

    15. I live in an extremely posh part of Dublin. South side dart line super posh. I was literally assaulted by a child this weekend and the parent(once they noticed) didn’t even apologise. I get the vibes from this post that this is referring to kids from the inner city or certain areas. The issue isn’t socio-economic, it’s cultural. Parents simply don’t parent anymore! We’re all just supposed to put up with kids being awful.

    16. TheFrontierzman on

Do the teens never get their ass kicked? At some point, you pick on or offend the wrong person. Is that not a thing?

    17. Sweet_Jury_1459 on

They are also out there assaulting six year olds and slapping some poor Indian bloke who wont retaliate. Scary situation over there.

    18. AlwaysTravel on

I’m in a rural town and the latest generation is great. All into health and fitness, it’s not good news for the pubs they only go once a week if at all, unlike my generation. But I find them very good. I’m speaking about late teens early twenties

    19. stoppableforce90 on

Parents won’t do anything because apparently its never their kids.

    20. Jumpy_Emu1111 on

Not to absolve these teens and their parents of all responsibility but I do think covid played a part in shaping this particular cohort of delinquents. All kids missed out on crucial socialisation and schooling but some of them were stuck inside in very unhappy homes, reported incidents of domestic violence shot up during this time. There needs to be massive investment in amenities and mental health support for kids to unfuck this situation

    21. Absentee parenting is a huge problem but it seems that has always existed to an extent, particularly in disadvantaged areas, they are let off and get up to all sorts. I think the noticeable increase can be attributed to soft touch parenting.

Now now little darling, doesn’t cut it. Or more commonly zero correction at all from a young age.

Parents too busy stuck in their phones completely ignoring kids running riot, can be seen daily in basically any public space, which in turn leads to young kids having zero understanding of authority or accountability or repercussions for actions.

    22. I grew up around families were nobody has worked, grandparents, parents and kids all in the same house sitting around, all very dysfunctional. The parents causing enough drama in the neighborhood themselves and the kids just off looking for attention they aren’t getting at home

    23. Should enforce community service for young offenders and deduct dole money they receive in the meantime

    24. AsideAsleep4700 on

Try having well behaved teenagers who get beaten up and robbed by these little shits.. my heart is in my mouth every time one of my sons goes into town. They need to bring back the law to jail them and overturn the Criminal Justice Act of 2006. If they attacked my son they would get an APSO and a Garda rep. The idea of a Garda working with the families of some of these kids to come up with a plan to improve behaviour is a joke.. these families are laughing at us all

    25. OppositeHistory1916 on

      > I’m absolutely sick to death of the way kids and teenagers control Irish public life

LOL what the fuck are you talking about? Outside a few parts of Dublin, this is a total non issue.

    26. > I’m in my late twenties and the generational difference is absolutely wild.

Sorry now but I’m heading for 40 and absolutely nothing has changed OP. It’s not a generation thing. There’s subsections of society who produce scuts, always have, always will.

    27. Adults need to cop the fuck on. They’re fucking children. Tell them to stop, quit being a coward and grow up.

    28. Ok_Commission1579 on

In a civilized country, parents are responsible for the offenses of children. If the court imposes a fine of, for example, €20,000 on the parents, they will raise the child better on the same day.

    29. the_sneaky_one123 on

It should be legal to smack the shit out of them.

Except if any full grown man was to put one of these teenagers in their place it would be the man who goes to jail.

    30. januaryrays on

Its always been like this though. I think back 15 years ago and it was worse and go back 20 odd years and probably worse again. Im not saying its great theee days but I reckon there is less hostile dangerous gangs of teenagers floating around.

    31. madra_uisce2 on

Also in my late 20s, a new parent and grew up working class. I vividly remember avoiding parts of my home town to avoid the other teens. I’ve had footballs robbed in the park as a child, my brother was mugged by one of my classmates when we were in primary school and a significant number of my former classmates are serving prison time.

Shitty teenagers exist in every generation…the first generations to fully grow up with social media are now teenagers and young adults, posting and boasting about this behaviour. Social media has sowed division and emboldened the very worst of our society to do awful things, and the teenagers will parrot this. Sure at their age, we were all eating spoonfuls of cinnamon because it was an Internet fad  because we were so impressionable. Its not too far a stretch to imagine that seeing racist thugs threaten people online has inspired some to do the same.

Yes, we have a serious issue with our laws protecting teenage criminals to the point where they are untouchable, but to blanket blame parents absolves the state of any responsibility to address the socio economic problems that lead to teenage criminality.
