The right kind of non-military national service could solve several problems simultaneously, and it wouldn’t need to be mandatory.
There’s a need for jobs for young people, a lack of skilled tradespeople, and a housing shortage. Train them and put them to work building houses. No need for it to be mandatory. This won’t happen because it would depress the real estate market, which the major players don’t want.
A similar thing could work for healthcare. That won’t happen because the provinces would rather let people die than give up any jurisdiction.
Mandatory service may also support national integration and social cohesion. There are far too many opportunities to ghettoize oneself, especially in the age of filter bubbles and online communities. It is harder to hold on to prejudice when you have worked alongside someone on a common mission.
The stark difference between men’s support for mandatory military service (39%) and women’s support for the same (2%) is remarkable. I wonder if it is the same for the young adults who would fall under this scheme.
Serving in the army should be mandatory. Canada keeps relying on the US for military support. The recent events with the US should raise awareness of the need of a real army.

The people who wouldn’t be compelled to serve but had their entire life to do so have the highest support, quelle surprise.
I doubt this would even be administratively feasible to implement at a mass scale. An optional climate disaster corps to start would be amazing. Having a trained citizenry across the country to help in climate disasters will be critical.
I’m all for national service, with the respective young high school grads having several different options for fulfilling their service. The military should be an option though.
I’m a supporter of mandatory national service, but it needs to be designed to be mutually beneficial and not simply extract cheap labour from younger generations.
The Trudeau government oversaw a devastating economic trajectory for young people, driving up housing and rental prices while weakening their bargaining power in the job market through their terrible immigration policies. At the same time, older Canadians saw their net worth soar and enjoyed generous tax breaks.
The last thing Canada needs is another scheme to rob young people.

I think in an ideal world, a national service period makes a lot of sense, but I don’t like the idea of forcing someone to join. I think I would rather it be something you can sign up for and have a 100% acceptance rate outside of some crazy edge cases. This way it’s the obvious option for any kids finishing high school who don’t know what to do, while not burdening those who have a plan.
Ah, another transfer of young people’s labour to the old and rich.
One should know when to stop pushing your luck.
Mandatory service in the military is a very good idea. And most if not all of the list could be done by or through the military. Could start with a light training program, understanding of basic skills and then you get to decide on what direction you want to go.
I’ve always liked the idea of a path, with the final option being military service. By age 20/21, you need to pick between the following (with all secondary schools being 100% free):
1) Uni/College/Trade School.
2) Administrative service with pathway to secondary school.
3) Limited military service with pathway to secondary school.
4) Full military service.
This way, we get a country full of educated/experienced individuals, as well as an increase to our military.
