This is disheartening.
just got medicated this week, €850 for the assessment, €1400 for the psychology.
It’s honestly incredibly upsetting, being unmedicated makes it so so hard to be productive to society in any way, like getting and holding a job. So while I struggle to afford the basics in the first place I also have to spend 2 grand just to be able to have the ability to function.
I’m 41, I tried to get assessed at 18, I didn’t because of the cost so I’ve just bare backed neurodivergence since. I live in England now and I’m on a waiting list but it’s close to 4 years so I might know some day. Didn’t realise for years that it’s free on the nhs or I would have started the process 10 years ago. I have however had an initial assessment that was indicative enough that I’m mostly comfortable saying I’m neurodivergent now and forgiving myself a little for how hard life has been
i got assessed for €1200 for autism and adhd which is the best rate i’ve found, but some of the clinics charge like crazy

For anyone who is interested, you can get an assessment done from a private psychiatrist in London for 600ish with zero waiting list. They can usually do it over Skype.

I got my diagnosis 10 years ago. €250. A single consultation lasting 30 minutes. I mum sent me to a psychiatrist when I was 8 and I still had that report and it was a no-brainer for him to diagnose it. He put me on Ritalin but I didn’t like it and took myself off it. I’m 52 now and have learned to manage it for the most part. Remember, ADHD may have given you some side benefits and you should take advantage. Are you good in a crisis? Do you ‚think different‘? I invented something. A device for a photography studio. Got a utility patent on it. They don’t give utility patents to twits.
I’m on the public waiting now for over 2 years. I was told last week it’ll be another 12 months. Just waiting for an assessment.
Only paid a 1000 and I got an assessment December last year. Was with a psychiatrist in St Patrick’s hospital. Did also do a 250 assessment with psychologist before that.
I was on a HSE waiting list for over 2 years then COVID hit and they told me they don’t deal with ADHD anymore so there’s no way they can assess me. A year later I randomly got called in to talk to a psychiatrist and he wanted me to fill out a questionnaire and said they’d get back to me. Low and behold he left the HSE and I was told it would be another 12 months minimum and I just never heard back. Still have no diagnosis at the age of 30 when I’ve been informally told I have it. I read Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté in prison and it was world altering. It’s almost like he was describing my entire childhood. Currently saving to get properly assessed through a clinic but it’s a joke that it costs that much. I just wanna function like a normal person.
Yeah I looked into this recently and gave up cos of the price tag.
I don’t believe there is an adult assessment available on the public through the HSE – if I’m wrong on that can someone please correct me cos I’d request to be referred to it.
I think I paid about 1100 a handful of years back, and 900 for my autism assessment, so 2k all in. Prices have absolutely shot up, and the same two services cost roughly double that amount now. It’s absolutely appalling and although ADHD medication can be gotten under the long term illness scheme for minors, it cannot for adults.
Just outta curiosity, has anyone gone through this assessment or something at a similar price, paid the money, and been told they don’t actually have ADHD afterall?
It’s fairly obvious my child has it (as do I). What are the pros and cons to getting diagnosed and medicated bar the obvious concentration difference?
Is there a difference in teaching, exams etc. I heard some exams have separate rooms for people with issues that may give them longer to finish, assistance during exams and such. I don’t like the idea of medicating for life, but don’t want to disadvantage them if there was help along the way by having a diagnosis.

My 2 boys were diagnosed with ADHD about 3 years ago. So 2 years ago I paid €550 for an online assessment with Dr Maria Rubeo. Diagnosed me with combined ADHD. I spent the last 6 months of 2023 trialling meds…didn’t get on with any of them. I tried concerta, tyvense,strattera and buproprion. Had side effects from them all, mostly made me very irritable,forgetful and grumpy. So I decided meds weren’t for me. I’m 50 years old so I’ve gotten this far without them.
Why is it so expensive and why are the HSE so useless at it?
And a lot of insurance plans don’t cover it, despite it being a treatable condition with a severe impact on quality of life.
A lot of the private providers also feel quite distant/rushed and not really looking into your psychology deeply, it’s just a transaction of paying the extortionate fee in exchange for medication. They just charge whatever they want and exploit people who are desperate for help with no other options.
Then for the pills themselves you’ll likely be hitting the 80 euro DPS limit on those alone, with costs exceeding 100 for some doses without it, in addition to regular psychiatrist appointments ranging from 100-200 euros.
Oh, and if you need to swap psychiatrist? The new one might require you to be fully RE-ASSESSED for a high assessment fee before continuing your prescription.
It’s a horrible condition to live with and you’ll be fucked over around every turn while trying to seek treatment. It’s grim.

My assessment was 1000 but my medication assessment will be 650. Idk if theres any more charges following this but as someone who’s struggling to make minimum wage it was actually devastating financially and because I can’t afford the medication assessment I am kind of feeling like I wasted a tonne of money on nothing.
I don’t understand why we are so bad in health compared to other European companies. What do we pay all this tax for?
Up north is cheaper
Paid around 2k and hated the process but it was probably the best money I ever invested in myself looking back as treatment changed my life, although many don’t have 2k to spend.
Went private for €720 and there was no waiting list. They made it a bit difficult though, wanting a GP referral and my autism diagnosis report.
Medication consultation was an additional €180 and is every time I meet them. 3 times now. It adds up.

Jesus thats a lot, I got an assessment with prof fitzgerald years ago for a hundred. Pretty sure hes retired a long time now though.
Just to add here that that if anyone is looking to get their child assessed for ADHD/Autism they can claim tax back through incapacitated child credit if the child is diagnosed, which will cover the fees and you can claim back up to 4 years,approx 3k a year tax back
Unfortunately, that’s just for starters. If I want to make anything more than a minor adjustment to my medication, I need to book an appointment with my Psychologist which is another €200.
However, medication is realistically only half the recommended treatment for ADHD. It’s supposed to be used in tandem with lifestyle changes and coaching, so I checked out a few Irish (as in, based in Ireland) ADHD coaches to try and get the ball rolling on that. But nope, it’d be over €1,000, which is well out of my price range right now.
Does this include an Autism assessment or are they two split Assignments?
The formalizing of this process has just pushed a few hundred quid into a few grand cost. It’s madness.
Not speaking for anyone else but for my experience my initial appointment was €1000 for private without a long waiting list, I got an appointment within 3 weeks and diagnosed and medicated at the first visit. Wish I had of know sooner. Im 37 now and life just feels so much easier. I always just thought I was an oddball haha
My younger sibling was diagnosed and my parents realised after going through it all that I was ticking every box as well . It had been something I’d said to my parents throughout secondary school but it was kinda pushed aside and never went anywhere .
At this point I’m almost certain I have it , I go down to my gp and bring it up to them. My gp proceeded to try talk me out of it and said everyone is checking these days and it’s extremely expensive , essentially trying to put me off testing for it.
It worked I couldn’t afford / justify the cost to check for it and never did .
Just going to live life the same wether I have it or not as I’ve gotten this far 🤷♂️
I was told on a video call (middle of covid) with camhs 3 months before my 18th birthday that I have adhd but afaik they never gave me an official diagnosis and never went through anything about what I could do to treat it.
Horrible to know I have it but to actually get the help I need I’d have to pay 1000s and hope I get rediagnosed
