Fun fact:
The flag of england (the cross of st. George) is actually the medieval flag of the repubblic of Genoa, but because of Genoa’s ifluence in the mediterrenean sea, the king Richard the lionheart asked the genoese to borrow their flag in order to not get attacked by pirates during his way to the middle east. After that genoa agreed to let england use its flag in exchange for a symbolic rent, but with time passing, england stopped paying
