Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Supreme Leader on international affairs, in an exclusive interview with a reporter from Tasnim News Agency, in response to a question about the recent action of US President Donald Trump regarding the so-called “Zangezur” corridor and his claim to lease this passage for 99 years, said: “Is the South Caucasus an ownerless area that Trump would lease? The Caucasus is one of the most sensitive geographical points in the world, and this passage will not become a corridor owned by Trump, but a cemetery for Trump’s mercenaries.”

Emphasizing Iran’s constant opposition to the formation of something called the Zangezur Corridor, he emphasized in explaining the reasons for Iran’s opposition that this corridor changes the geopolitical situation of the region, shifts borders, and is designed to disintegrate Armenia.

Referring to Iran’s firm actions in showing our country’s opposition to the launch of this conspiratorial corridor, the advisor to the Supreme Leader on international affairs said: „When Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan insisted on their demand to build this corridor, the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the command of Lieutenant General Shahid Bagheri (then Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces), conducted numerous exercises in northwest Iran, which demonstrated our country’s readiness and seriousness in preventing this action.“

Emphasizing that “renting a corridor by another country is a naive statement and Trump is being naive,” Velayati stated: “This claim, meaning Trump renting a corridor on this side of the world, is like someone going from this side of the world and renting the Panama Canal for himself! This is impossible and will not happen.”

Pointing out that “Trump, as always, makes flashy but meaningless statements,” he continued: “Trump thinks he is a real estate agent and wants to rent a land or region!”

**With or without Russia, we will prevent the security of the South Caucasus from being jeopardized.**

Emphasizing that the corridor plan, which would lead to the future division of Armenia, faces strong opposition from the Armenian people, the former Iranian foreign minister noted that no nation is willing or willing to divide its territory, even if their government unfortunately takes weak positions.

Referring to the positions of Mr. Pashinyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Velayati said that during his previous visit to Iran, he emphasized that he agreed with Iran’s position and opposed the construction of the corridor, given the clear and conspiratorial disadvantages of this plan.

Recalling the changes that the construction of the Zangezur Corridor will bring to Iran’s borders and will limit our country’s communication route in the north and northwest to Turkey, he stated: „By implementing this conspiracy, the security of the South Caucasus will be jeopardized, and accordingly, Iran has emphasized that it will move towards the security of the South Caucasus, whether with or without Russia, and of course, we believe that Russia is also strategically opposed to this corridor.“

I’m seeing an alarming rate of „zangezur corridor“ being named everywhere. We need to get ahead of the optics and not let everyone report on a route through our region as „zangezur“.

    3. What Armenia does or doesn’t do on its own territory is Armenia’s business. Whether we agree or disagree with these actions is our own business, so kindly go fuck yourself.

I am sick and tired of every single non-Armenian giving their opinion on what should be done or how things should be conducted on Armenian territory.

    4. Isn’t it just a route that we open on our own terms, and the Americans are just there to build and manage the infrastructure? Don’t see the problem for Iran

    5. This is very surprising. It’s even more odd that it doesn’t l align with the understanding of the route laid out by the three officials, I’m not sure what indication they have that this road would somehow limit their ability to move goods North.

I thought it was all just Russian propaganda. You mean to tell me that Iran actually opposes this? Shit, so many people here were telling me Iran would be fine with it. At least RA will have Turkey on its side.

I thank our Iranian allies in helping us against turkic and US threats to the Armenian sovereignty.

    8. When was this speed made? before yesterday’s event or after? From what i’m reading, it seems he’s commenting on rumors a week ago where it was said the land would be leased for 99 years, and as we all know it turned out it was the logistics company „with the potential“ to lease up to 99 years.

Can anyone spot the date on this interview? I can’t.

Just like Russia, too little too late Iran should have thought about and taken action to prevent this from happening by defending Armenia during conflict. Instead they have been neutral so be it. Azerbaijan had Turkeys full support and thats why they are doing whatever they want.

    10. >Is the South Caucasus an **ownerless** area that Trump would lease?

      That’s rude.

Armenia should’ve told Azerbaijan from day 1 that it won’t allow Azerbaijanis to travel across Armenian territory unless they go through Armenian security checkpoints and the same procedure as every other god damn nationality. If the Azerbaijanis don’t like it, then they can continue traveling to Nakhchivan via Iran. What exactly is Armenia gonna benefit from giving Azerbaijan „unimpeded“ access through its territory? Money from customs would amount to peanuts. It’s a rugged geography, most of the regional/intl trade will continue to go through Georgia’s low-lying countryside. That’s number 1. Number 2, you could get your cheap gas and oil from Iran if you want. Azerbaijan is literally running out of oil by the mid 2030s according to BP studies. What are you really gaining from any of this?

You lost Artsakh because you angered the Russians, who, let’s face it, are the only reason why you have a country in the South Caucasus in the first place since all of this land once belonged to Qajar Iran, but the Qajars were just too stupid to preserve their rule and defend themselves from the Russian army. Love or hate the Russians, they’re the reason Armenia exists. Yerevan was after all only 20% Armenian when the Iranians lost control of it. And the Muslims living there weren’t „Azeris“. They were Iranians. Azeri is just a fake modern invention.

So you angered the Russians and turned them into your enemies, which made you lose Artsakh forever. Now you anger the only country that still cares about your existence, i.e. Iran.

Iran won’t care about your existence or territorial integrity shmegrity anymore if you turn into a Western/American base for espionage and sabotage against the Iranian nation.

This is sheer and utter stupidity on Armenia’s part. This is definitely capitulation. And let’s not sugarcoat it. Even if the deal with America allows Armenian guards to stand in front of the border checkpoints into Syunik, we all know that everything related to scanning items and cars will be outsourced to a US private company which will then incrementally increase its spying activities against Iran.

But Iran won’t let this happen. Armenia decided to become Iran’s enemy with this agreement, and slowly but surely it will realize that this was the gravest mistake it has ever taken in its existence.

You’re landlocked and surrounded by genocidal enemies and only 2 countries in this region have helped you in the past. You lost 1 of these 2 countries as a friend because you decided to sell your soul to the West, as if the West isn’t as imperialistic as Russia (newsflash: it is). At least Russians shared something cultural with you. Then you went ahead and ruined your ties with Iran. Great, fantastic job.

Uncle Sam won’t make you prosperous, nor would someone sitting in Munich. To be prosperous, you need your neighbors, and if 2 of your neighbors were helping you survive all these decades, then you do not under any circumstances turn your backs against them, unless you’re bought by Western vulture capitalists like Pashinbaijan.

I’m from Kuwait. I’m not Armenian or Christian. I’ve been with the Armenians since my childhood. I haven’t seen a case of national suicide as depressing as what I’m seeing with Armenia today.

Ironically, Armenia really needs to rediscover God these days.

Almost like Countries run by dictators like Iran are not your allies or something Armenia. Weird huh? Like why in the world would you people ever think Russia or Iran care about anything more then themselves? Both countries are dictatorships, they don’t care about you
