Is Ukraine even in the negotiations? What happens if Ukraine doesn’t agree?

      This is really confusing stuff.

Here we go again, I guess Diaper Don had a senior moment and has forgotten that this did not work 3 months ago.

Someone please explain to me how the US just gets to demand an allied sovereign nation has to give away its own territory to a hostile invader. In times like this, I kinda miss when he was an isolationist president. What we have now is crooked global policeman on crack (I won’t use ‚leader of the free world‘ because that clearly no longer applies).

    4. It’s sad to see the US reduced to the status of a vassal state to Russia and Israel. Ukrainians are dying and Palestinian children are starving to death because of it. I hope Americans are proud of their President.

EU need to get their shit together…. It’s obvious Trump will get mad and abandon Ukraine after these negotitiations failed. He will say „i tried“.

Why should Ukraine even agree on that? It is nothingburger give up officially territories for Russia stop attacking, that it can break in any moment and getting a pause reliefe to prepare to take more

    7. Ok so trump idea of sanction on russia was just a cover for cutting aid to Ukraine. Again who fall for this shit.

      …ok?

Regardless of whether or not he’s willing to give up land for peace, this is exactly what Zelensky should be saying right now.

You take a maximalist position going into a negotiation.

Maybe he’s willing to give up land. But if he is, taking this position going into the negotiations give him the best chance of getting peace for his little land as possible.

Maybe he’s not willing to give up land. But if he isn’t, at least entering into negotiations creates a, what, two week ceasefire? That’s a positive thing. Also, the horse might sing. Though, this being Reddit, I doubt more than 10% of the people reading this will get that reference.

We won’t know what he really thinks until, what, 2 weeks from now? Maybe a month? And even then, he might change his mind sometime between now and then?

It is incredible how many people on the internet think they’re smarter and better informed than the people actually doing the work. I’m not saying that world leaders don’t often make mistakes, but it’s incredible how many Starbucks baristas know how to handle international negotiations while they’re also terrified to enter into negotiations with a car dealership.

I negotiate for a living. My clients are a pretty decent slice of society, though obviously skewed towards the affluent side. I would say 90%+ of American society has no idea how to negotiate anything, let alone give advice on international Peace negotiations. And having spent some time in a few markets around the world, I’d guess it would be 70%+ for most other countries.

Let it cook. I’m not saying this is going to turn out well, I don’t have a lot of faith that this will turn out well, but Zelensky saying the above is essentially a null data set. It’s exactly what he would say in the situation regardless of how he was planning to go forward.

    9. And that was the ask from Putin for a *ceasefire* – Not even for the end of the war? Trump is getting played hard.

How do they keep coming up with these stupid ‘offers’. In no reality would Ukraine accept this.

Perhaps a trade for occupied land in the East for Crimea could be on the cards, but that is something Russia would never agree to.

    11. Z: Why would we reward Putin for invading us? And a failed invasion at that. What would I tell the families of those who gave all in our defense?

T: yeah but, he has these tapes. And you don’t have the tapes. Or the cards.

      Z: Again with the cards?

I think in times like this we should ask MAGA lunatics how much of the US they’d be willing to hand to Russia voluntarily.

Another excuse not to go ahead with sanctions !
      It’s getting boring now !

    14. It’s not right, its not fair, its not justice …

.. but in order to stop the war my inexpert impression is that Zelensky might accept ongoing Russian control of the areas they hold but without formal agreement they are part of Russia if he got acceptable security guarantees backed up by Western military forces to protect the rest and some chance of strenthening economic and military ties to the West..

Putin will demand formal acceptance of him taking full control of the bits he wants, the end of sanctions and Ukraine not allowed in NATO or to improve its military. This basically being rewarded for aggression and atrocities.

Difficult to see how the two sides can reach agreement despite Ukraine being the one that is the victim and yet possibly offering concessions.

Both sides are probably at best, hoping Trump just gets more annoyed with the other. I predict Putin will offer enough that Trump then blames Ukraine fur not surrendering. I dont suppose Puton is stupid enough to do his thing of making other leaders wait for hours to meet him and puss of Trump.

    15. Trump will agree to give up land he has no right to to Russia. Then he’ll stop giving a shit after Zelenskyy denies the agreement and will pull out of the entire thing.

    16. ImABrickwallAMA on

Too right! They should not have to give up their territory just to massage some dictator’s ego. Ukraine is Ukrainian, and the land that has been invaded should be returned to them.

    17. sarcasmlikily on

At this point, I truly think all these headlines it says Trump is gonna give Russia land are just Russian propaganda. because every time some type of talk is happening, that’s a new article. Waiting to happen with the same type of headline.

    18. And at this moment Zelensky speaks on behalf of the entire planet.
Not allowing psychopaths to divide Ukraine is a question of the dignity of civilization.
This is the answer – do we have morality and the readiness to resist them or have we failed as a society.

    19. Harbournessrage on

Trump can’t possibly expect that Ukraine will just give the whole fortification line away to Russia. That’s a lot of sizeable cities and towns with thousands hundreds of people living here. Russia realistically won’t be able to take it with the force any time soon (and i mean – in the coming many years!) so that’s already unacceptable position for Ukraine to agree with.
