      >As the story goes, Murphy received his Oscar nomination for “Dreamgirls” just over a week before “Norbit” opened in theaters. He had emerged as the season’s supporting actor frontrunner after winning prizes from the Golden Globes and Screen Actors’ Guild Awards. Then “Norbit” opened to abysmal reviews from critics. Then Alan Arkin won the Oscar for best supporting actor for “Little Miss Sunshine.” The industry was quick to blame the “Norbit effect” for why Murphy lost the Oscar.

      >During a recent video interview for Complex’s “360 With Speedy Morman” series, Murphy pushed back when the host cited “Norbit” as one of the comedian’s worst movies. Murphy was quick to name “Pluto Nash” and “Holy Man” instead.

      >“I love ‘Norbit,’” Murphy said. “‘Norbit’ came out right after I got that Oscar nomination. There were articles like, ‘How can he get an Oscar, he did this?’ They’re two different movies. I wrote ‘Norbit’ with my brother, Charlie [Murphy], and we think ‘Norbit’ is funny. Here’s the thing with ‘Norbit,’ it came out and they gave me a Razzie Awards for worst actress, worst actor and worst actor of the decade. And I was like, ‘Come on now, shit ain’t that bad.’”

      Decade of watching Shrek with the kid means I can’t read an Eddie Murphy quote without imagining it as Donkey lol.

      I liked Norbit. Not his best, but it was fun. No idea how it’s aged, but at the time it made me laugh.

      Coming from a guy that loves me a shitty 2000s comedy sometimes, Norbit was fucking atrocious.

      The thought of Rasputia’s voice makes me want to cut my ears off. That movie was completely unwatchable.

      I’ve never seen it because it looks terribly unfunny to me but I totally forgot about Pluto Nash. That was indeed a terrible movie

      Man I remember when I was a kid I was laughing my ass off with my dad (probably stoned af) watching Norbit.

      I’m a sucker for anything where Eddie Murphy plays multiple characters. I can’t believe I didn’t realize Norbit’s Asian adoptive father was also Murphy until the second time I saw it. Is it the kind of movie that’s gonna change my life? No. But I first saw it when I was like 14 and that shit was funny as hell at the time. Shit ain’t that bad indeed.

      Eddie Murphy not winning for Dreamgirls is my biggest Oscar outrage of all time.

      I always wondered if I was the only person who liked it. I don’t think it’s bottom five Eddie Murphy movies, but even his worst stuff is likable. The guy is charisma on legs.
