Tragic failing by police, hope the IOPC review again.
Bhim Kohli, 80, was punched and kicked by a 14-year-old boy while a girl, 12, filmed the attack in September – two weeks after he had witnessed another Asian man being racially abused and assaulted by **two other boys** nearby.
Now a report – given to Susan Kohli – shows police knew the identities of **the pair involved in the previous assault** days after it happened, but did not arrest them until after her father’s death.
I wouldn’t have thought those two events would have been connected.
Ridiculous. Police everywhere seem to be useless in this country
And of course no one will lose their jobs due to this.
I’ll be honest I doubt it would have changed a damn thing.
The type of kids who commit these offences do not care about punishments or deterrents. They don’t think as far ahead as having to deal with the consequences. They know full well they can keep going out and doing it again as our justice system hates dealing with kids and not unreasonably wants to avoid criminalising them, so they’d have been at worst pied off to Youth Offending where they treat them with kid gloves and take them out for trips and treats( The theory is that if you show them there’s another life where they can have positive experiences that they may never have had with their upbringing. Still can sting a bit when you’ve been the victim of a crime from someone like that).
Even if they’d been arrested as soon as their identity was known, they’d have been interviewed and bailed within hours because of their age, as It’s possible they’d have been voluntarily interviewed rather than arrested. I’ll be honest, a 12 and 13 year old, would be on the custody sergeants list to have the OIC immediately interview them the second they’ve had legal advice and had an appropriate adult there.
There’s nothing to suggest that even if the two who did the first one knew the other pair or vice versa, or that if they’d been arrested that that would have somehow made it’s way onto the two killers radar. Even if they were known to them, again, it’s highly unlikely to be a deterrent. Do not make the mistake of assuming a juvenile racist little shit thinks the same way as a reasonable adult.
Frankly the whole thing is a massive stretch. Should police routinely now make decisions to arrest for one offence, based on what unknown different suspects might do in the future to different victims?
I remember this one. The police were appealing for witnesses but refused to unblur footage of the attack. I thought at the time that was very weird but guess they realised their suspects were underaged, so they…didn’t know quite what to do? Right…
