      So are they going to call it super super massive or change the name of the other one to medium massive?

      A fun little tidbit at the end. Assuming their calculations are correct, we either just happened to catch this black hole JUST AFTER after it finished gobbling up everything nearby, or we have another new thing to learn about galaxy SMB formation.

    3. The article says 36 billion, but TON 618 has 66 billion. What’s making the measurement here special? Was TON 618 just an estimation and this one is confirmed to be about 36 billion solar masses?

Can anyone with a more informed astrophysics background please help me understand if there are particular black hole sizes or galaxy size/compositions/complexities which would just take too much time to have formed in our current understanding of the age of the universe? It seems to my casual perspective that we base a lot of our understanding on things on the observable universe, while acknowledging that there is very likely a whole lot more beyond the cosmic background that we can’t observe which could very easily teach us that the universe is actually much older than ~13.8 billion years? Also if black holes of such supermassive size likely formed by merging with other black holes, perhaps multiple ones, wouldn’t the amount of time it took for their gravitational forces to bring them together (or for galaxies to form around them) take so long that it wouldn’t make sense for them to exist yet in the current understanding of the age of the universe?
