      To them, the second-greatest injustice imaginable is for those [they perceive to be] on the bottom [of social hierarchy] to have access to the rights, credibility, and resources reserved for those on top. The first greatest injustice is for those on top to be bound by the restrictions, scrutiny, and lack of resources reserved for those on the bottom.

      To them, children are property of their social betters, and „know your place“ is their mantra.

      Since **none** of the commenters here as of this posting bothered to read the article before spouting off, here are the key points:

      * the bill allowed a clause that lets 17-year-olds receive a less serious third-degree charge of unlawful sexual activity to be extended to 18-year-olds, provided they were still in high school.
      * Prior to the bill passing, the 18-year-old could have faced a charge of child rape, a first-degree felony that would have required them to register as a sex offender, along with a prison sentence ranging anywhere from six years to life in jail.
      * the law did not apply retroactively and the 18-year-old was not charged with the new lower-level crime created by the bill
      * the legislation had been crucial to the improved plea deal

      So basically the only change to the law was that existing Romeo and Juliet provisions afforded to minors were extended to include enrolled high school students who happened to have turned 18 prior to graduation.

      I’m as anti-GOP schenanigans and anti-child rape as they come, and I fail to see how society benefits from mandating that high school seniors who just turned 18 be sentenced to lifelong sex offender registration and 6-years-to-life jail terms for having a non-coercive sexual relationships with 13-year-old high school freshmen; I think the lesser charges and sentencing is fair and just so long as we are talking about current high schoolers who are all in the 13-18-year old age range. 18-year-old high schoolers are still high school **kids**, and prior to this legislation even two completely age-appropriate high school seniors in a relationship would potentially be risking life-ruining mandatory judicial sentencing for half of the couple when one turns 18 before the other, unless they both just happened to have the exact same birthday, which is unreasonable and absurd.

      It’s one thing to have laws that make 18-16 relationships a felony, and to change those. The Romeo and Juliet type laws. I get that. You have different birthdays and it’s easy to have a period where you go from 17-16 to 18-16 for a few months. I know people who were in relationships like this in HS.

      To change it to protect 18-13… that’s wild. There is no way a 13y old can ever consent and comprehend the decision in the way an 18yr old does. It’s just not possible.
