French authorities have arrested a Moroccan man after he allegedly lit a cigarette off a memorial in Paris.

The moment at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which includes an ever-burning flame, under the Arc de Triomphe was caught on video, leading to outrage from French leaders.

Newsweek reached out to the French Interior Ministry for comment via email Wednesday afternoon.

If they have to charge him with something maybe they should just charge him with trespassing since he went past the barrier, he hardly desecrated the monument, it’s still in one piece. If he wasn’t Moroccan his charge wouldn’t be as severe.

    3. wtf, even the video in the article has the jet 2 (or whatever) holiday audio track.

Well, at least he didn’t burn his face. That flame is a litte larger than one from a lighter, so this is a bit dangerous. (Gust of wind at the wrong time, etc.)

What’s the actual crime here, like disrespecting the monument or something?

This is the most European thing anyone has ever done. Give him his citizenship.
EDIT: Lived in France for years and literally saw a man in Nantes threaten to stab a group of people just to get a cigarette to smoke. Being this committed to smoking is a uniquely French phenomenon and this Moroccan is more French than anyone who has downvoted me.

I can’t imagine a more French thing he could have done, why are they mad at him?

    8. Well well, how the turntables!

Pretty sure if a Frenchman lit up a Koran, a lot of people in this sub would say “meh, freedom of expression, so what?!”

Clearly very integrated into French culture (arrogant and loves smoking)

Time is not far when Europeans will also start getting their sentiments get hurt from Charli hebdo cartoons.

I’m totally in the minority here, so feel free to shit on me.

It was a monumentally stupid thing to do (pun unintended, but not bad, eh?), but he didn’t deface the monument, spit on it, make insulting or threatening remarks, etc. I’m not even sure the motivation was to show disrespect, although that was obviously the result. He was apparently drunk at the time.

The latest news is that his residency permit is going to be revoked. Fine, I can understand that. But from some of the comments here and elsewhere on Reddit, you would think he had just committed a new September 11.
