      In 2023, the third year of Joe Biden’s presidency, crime rates in the United States declined significantly, despite public perceptions. As NBC News reported, the good news continued in 2024:

      “Statistics released Tuesday by the FBI indicate that violent crime decreased overall in the United States by 4.5% last year. … According to the FBI, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter decreased an estimated 14.9%, robbery decreased an estimated 8.9% rape decreased an estimated 5.2%, and aggravated assault decreased an estimated 3.0%. Property crime also decreased an estimated 8.1% from 2023 to 2024, and hate crimes decreased an estimated 1.5%, the report found.”

      To be sure, none of this comes as a big surprise. After a spike in crime rates toward the end of Donald Trump’s first term, national data showed improvements throughout the Biden era.

      The FBI’s findings did stand out in a political context, however, in large part because the facts made clear just how brazenly many Republican leaders lied to the public during the 2024 campaign season.

      The Republicans are trying to create a crime wave as hard as they can by reducing the social safety net. They want to make people starve to force them to work harder and clearly don’t understand that sure some will if desperate work harder others will resort to crime that if feed and housed never would.

      Too bad FOX News (and FOX Business News) continues to spew brazen lies that impact election results.

      This would be illegal in many advanced democracies.

      Crime could be practically non-existent in most of the US but if it’s an election year the GOP will tell everyone that it’s all burning to the ground and the streets are running red with the blood of the innocent.

      They ain’t seen nothing yet. Unemployment, food insecurities, people losing safety nets, people losing their homes, and rising socioeconomic issues. I think as we all know that we are just in the first few months of this too and it hasn’t peaked yet.

      It’s rather frustrating how coordinated the conservative media sphere is to be able to make baseless claims and shake off the idea those claims need supporting evidence. The defense for having so much coordination is based on one such claim that their opposition did it first, and therefore, it’s alright.

      I really hope someday to see civil, serious discourse again. Especially when the President is hardly criticized for profanity (and blasphemy, but that patently doesn’t matter) in public appearances where children could be expected to watch.

      That is such an important use of time. It much more important than a conversation about universal health care, the environment or economy.

      You know what’s gonna cause a crime wave? Rampant inflation, price gouging, poorer education, food insecurity, tariffs, loss of common sense consumer protections, loss of health care, housing affordability, the list goes on…

      We are destined for a time of desperation we haven’t seen where the have-nots have less and could potentially turn to crime, just to survive.

      I mean duh? This happens basically every election. Republicans have spent decades fearmongering about crime rates that are some of the lowest in recorded history and often actively dropping and Dems constantly fall for the trap by accepting their framing of the issue as valid and legitimizing it.

      It’s like JD Vance whining about goddamn *Columbus, Ohio* being „dangerous“. It’s a wildly outdated framing that mainly works on people who have never set foot outside of their little town of 1000 people and thus believe basically anything negative you say about cities because their only reference is crime dramas on TV.
