I wonder if the larger, more genetically diverse populations are buffered against deleterious mutations because of their greater relative heterozygosity?
Bad mutations might be more likely to re-occur in a larger population but in turn are buffered by good ones. Small populations are more subject to drift and the genetic load of individuals is higher, so introgression of a few non-optimal genes could depress the inbred population’s overall fitness.
