I was reading an article this morning and honestly it defies belief. Even in 2022 the UK & US were still buying russian oil. Thus, effectively, funding the russian war machine.

What I didn’t expect though is that EU countries are still buying russian oil in 2024 and today

      Surely this has to stop?

So, let me understand this… War starts and Germany and EU get off Russian energy. In the meantime, Mercedes, Daimler and other German industry giants are moving their things to India WHILE India is using Russian energy…

In the meantime, Germany just lets that happen, while same industries have 10s of thousand layoffs in Germany.

      What is EU/Germany’s gameplan here?

    3. Why is the UK grouped with the U.S. here? Brexit made infographics and tour announcements so weird. Things like “Europe + UK tour”

Time to give Ukraine longer range weapons so they can start fucking up more Russian oil infrastructure

    5. UnknownMight on

By this logic the whole world should place a trade embargo with Russia, something you don’t want to decide overnight

    6. Russia will sell it to other countries. While EU will buy it from US and other countries. Not sure it will change anything for Russia

    7. The question is: who is buying the indian and Turkish oil (or I’m guessing, petroleum products)? First of all we need to look at the west: is anyone buying anything _made_ from oil, from Turkey or India? Then we should stop doing that.

The EU/UK no longer buying Russian oil and petroleum products _directly_ from Russia has no real effect if we are buying more products from Turkey and India that consist of Russian oil. Basically: any country that has a not-insignificant level of Russian oil in their inflow, should be completely barred to import from, to western countries.

    8. You will be amazed to learn who is buying all that Russian energy from the Indians and others.

The EU is the hypocrite here, as it has failed to build anything of any significance economically in the past 30 years, apart from being incredibly busy giving speeches about universal values and telling the rest of the world how they should do it.

Ursula out, forced implementation of the Draghi report ASAP.

    9. I mean eu almost stopped us stopped etc. idk why this get posted here.

Eu will stop all import when contract run out or there found other place to buy

    10. Well, at least they sell it at a very low price, making their profits lower compared to what they received from Europe.

    11. bingbang1223 on

You don’t want them to stop. Oil price will shoot too $100 a barrel the next day. You just got out of covid inflation, you are not ready for the consequences.

    12. Kraz_The_Spazz on

Were still buying Russian oil, Theres just middle(countries)men buying it from Russia first, then we buy it from them.

If we completely cut off Russia from everything and dont buy anything, theyll surely lose the war, but also their country, it would grow uncontrollable from famine, inflation and civil war, if they dont just push the button for putting them on that path already, then were all gone.

As much hate and anger we can have for Russia, i dont think we cant just get rid of them, they’re too big to replace, and too dangerous to crush. We can hurt them and make things very difficult, were going to need their resources in the future, this generally just applies if you care about future people and want children.

I still think we can squeeze MUCH harder, and we are pussyfooting around.

    13. So this chart is telling us that who is still funding Russia to invade Ukraine, which causes the Europw billions to help defund.

      Oh, that includes Europe itself???

    14. WinDrossel007 on

Who buys Indian and Chinese oil?

      Who buys oil from Azerbaijan?

Turkey imports Russian crude/refined fuel → reprocesses → EU

India refines Russian crude → sells refined fuels via traders → UK & EU markets

China -> similar model: Russian crude → domestic refining → exports into global markets that supply EU

How are you going to stop that?

    15. PhoenixHntr on

India is just a proxy for Europe consumption. Europe went up the tree and now have a difficulty getting down.

    16. WorldOfTech on

Why? They are free to buy oil from whoever they want, the cheaper, the better (unlike our Geniuses here in the EU who have messed the economies of all countries just so they can virtue signal).

    17. Significant_Cover_48 on

Of course they are buying Russian oil. We always knew they would be.

    18. Is Other a round about way that the EU, UK or US is getting the oil still?

    19. Developing countries don’t give a shit about anything except the best way for them to develop. And it clearly is to buy russian oil.
If they didn’t do so, they would probably burn more coal which would funnily be even worse from a planetary point of view

    20. Haunting_Switch3463 on

They have their economic and geopolitical interests and we have ours. They care about war in Europe just as much as we care about wars happening in Asia and Africa. We have two friendly countries, to us, currently commiting genocide, but are willing to look the other way because the benefits outweight the moral issues.

    21. 99hamiltonl on

Only way it’ll change is if pressure is out on those countries to stop. Only way likely to work is by applying scantions/restrictions on those countries to convince them not to (but that does risk alienation unless lots of people do it).

If you didn’t care about Russia or Ukraine would you stop trade with Russia. The Western world (rightly) cares as it’s on our border and part of our alliance structure of sorts. Without collective pressure India and China won’t stop.

    22. I_will_never_reply on

I can’t blame India at all, got a population of over a billion they need to think of. Why would they turn away cheap oil because of some shitty regional conflict that’s nothing to do with them. I don’t see any embargoes on Israeli imports….. (or fill in your current worldwide conflict of choice)

    23. ChatGPTbeta on

It needs to stop but won’t stop.

China and India and anyone else is looking out for their own economies. Buying Russian oil cheaper helps them grow. They don’t give a fig about Ukraine, or anyone else, They only care if and when it affects them, and you can guarantee that if Russia was invading any part of India, India would be the first to expect everyone to stop buying Russian oil.

They also won’t be dictated too by anyone else, especially countries who they deem to be equals or of lesser value to them.

    24. anders_hansson on

One thing that people seem to misunderstand is that the oil market is very much a global market. There are producers, consumers, and paths in between.

E.g. the EU heavily reduced the direct imports of oil from Russia after 2022. However, while we decreased imports, India and others increased their imports. E.g. see: [IEA – Average Russian oil exports by country and region, 2021-2024](https://www.iea.org/data-and-statistics/charts/average-russian-oil-exports-by-country-and-region-2021-2024) (note how Russia’s exports stayed roughly the same for the last four years). At the same time we [heavily increased our petroleum imports from India](https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Indias-Fuel-Exports-to-the-EU-Soar-Due-to-Refining-Loophole-in-Russia-Sanctions.html).

The takeaway here is that Russia’s exports stay the same, and we’re still funding their oil exports.

The reason is quite simple: [Russia is the world’s third largest oil producer](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_oil_production) (roughly on par with no 1 USA and no 2 Saudi Arabia). Consumers still need the oil, and there is no way to cut off Russian oil from the world market without having serious negative effects.

It’s only a question of which ways the oil will flow before it reaches the consumers. The US under Biden even encouraged India to increase their imports from Russia to avoid a crashed oil market.

So in practice there is neither a possibility nor a will from the west to decrease Russian oil exports. It’s all about money flows and optics.

    25. European countries stopped buying to the point their purchases don’t matter much.

Getting completely rid of it is impractical atm though – exp. no transport alternatives for non-russian. As long as there is mid-term strategy to get rid of it, it makes no sense to completely stop buying immediately.

EU could be self sufficient in energy sector, or atleast consume more „internally“ (looking at norway), but we dont want to pay that price. We also have big egos and upper class that wants to keep hegemony. Germany most likely would be quicker to block Poland for a possible extraction of energy in the baltic sea than buy russian energy again.

    27. I wonder why a certain country is called „ally“ and gets the slack on this graph. Focus on India guys.
