As unpopular as the idea is, I have long thought the “tunnel” is primarily leverage to be used in negotiations to buy back the 407. The pitch being that if the tunnel gets built and diverts the requisite traffic away from 407, the 407 corporation won’t be able to sustainably meet their minimum traffic level obligations and either forefeit it back or sell it back for pennies on the dollar.
However unlike in 2021, nation building is currently on the menu and the conditions are arguably perfect for Ford to do with Ford does best and have the feds foot a significant portion of the bill on a project like this.
C-5 directly addresses Ford’s past criticisms of how hard it is to push through infrastructure projects, he’s best buds with the prime minister and has a great relationship with the transport minister, it’s the kind of project that creates jobs and domestic competency and expertise in the area during a time we need that more than ever…
So, again I know how unpopular this is on Reddit, but I think it’s getting built and I think the province will ultimately come away with 407 for pennies in the process. I really do.
