Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health and Human Services secretary, is making changes that threaten the public health system, from telling lies about the childhood vaccine schedule to replacing credible members of a vaccine advisory panel with people known to spread misinformation.

Groups like the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have spoken out against these changes, and some major medical associations are even suing Kennedy in response to his changes to the COVID-19 vaccine schedule.

Kennedy’s attack on vaccines isn’t exactly a surprise — he has a history of anti-vaccine remarks, which was a major talking point throughout his Senate confirmation hearings earlier this year. Specifically, his beliefs were front and center during a heated exchange in which Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) brought up a comment that Kennedy once made about vaccinations and the Black community.

In 2021, Kennedy had said, “We should not be giving Black people the same vaccine schedule that’s given to whites, because their immune system is better than ours.”

Alsobrooks asked Kennedy to explain what he meant by that remark, and he went on to reference a “series of studies” while saying research shows that “Blacks need fewer antigens.” (For the record, experts say that this is not true.)

I believe Kennedy should stick to what he knows. Medicine isn’t it. Decapitating whales and collecting roadkill bear cubs are not on the curriculum of any medical school. When it comes to matching Cabinet secretaryships and other high positions with the right people, it almost seems that Donald Trump uses some bizarre spin-the-bottle procedure. That would explain a lot.

This is literally an eighteenth century British theory. Historians estimate that roughly a third of all the African-Americans in Virginia who fled to the British cause, hoping to win their liberty by fighting for Dunmore, died of disease—because the British believed that African-Americans could not get smallpox, and never bothered to inoculate them.

When smallpox hit Dunmore’s flotilla, the British were largely immune thanks to vaccinations, but the Black recruits died in their hundreds. They were isolated in huts on Gwynn Island, and the dead were buried in shallow mass burials. Dunmore was forced to abandon his grand idea of a free Ethiopian Regiment—and Virginia. When the Patriots rolled up on Gwynn Island, they then set the huts with the sick inside on fire.

Not a great moment in US history, tbh. But my point is that we learned back in 1776 that Black folks need vaccines too. Two hundred and forty-nine YEARS ago.
