      >The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

No mention of Hamas or the hostages, no mention of what happened to Israel on October 7th, no mention of the ceasefire proposals that Israel has put forth. What a piece of propaganda.

Look, I actually think an international coalition in Gaza would be a good thing. But damn it journalists, do your job better.

Maybe this is just what I should expect from a Turkish publication.

      >“I am personally in favor of the secretary-general of the UN using Chapter Seven procedure, by which, whether or not the Security Council agrees“

sounds like Michael D has no issue throwing out the UN rulebook when it suits his agenda

    3. Ireland should send their troops there to fix things. get some Irish boots on the ground and clean up this mess

    4. ElCaminoInTheWest on

Absolutely nobody wants to send soldiers into this shitshow, and why would you? Any ‚peacekeepers‘ would just become cannon fodder. If the Irish are so concerned, their armed forces can lead the way.

    5. If Ireland is willing to send its own forces to take full responsibility for Gaza, the Israel would say “be my guest.”

Put aside the Palestinians for a moment. Is there a single rational person who thinks that Israel *wants* to be in Gaza, seeing its soldiers die or suffer serious injuries, and forcing hundreds of thousands of reservists to leave their jobs and families for extended periods?

Okay, if Ireland is willing to send peacekeepers to guarantee stability in Gaza no problem.

If they aren’t, they can shut up

The UN famously has a poor track record at stopping these kinds of conflicts. The most high profile cases:
      -rwanda
      -Yugoslavia
      -Kosovo
      -DRC
were not stopped by them. It has not halted the Ukraine conflict, nor Sudan, nor Myanmar’s ongoing civil war, or, lets be honest most other ongoing issues. It’s job today mostly looks like managing post-conflict areas and a restrcicted form of peacekeeping.

      >“I am personally in favor of the secretary-general of the UN using Chapter Seven procedure, by which, whether or not the Security Council agrees, and even if there’s a blockage, the right exists for the secretary-general to seek to put together an international defense of a corridor,“ he said.

I watched the RTE video. It’s an accurate quote.

It’s not an accurate statement about Chapter VII. Chapter VII doesn’t have any provision by which the Secretary-General can bypass the Security Council. Chapter VII doesn’t even mention the Secretary-General.

The Secretary-General has the authority to add an item to the Security Council’s agenda

      >The Secretary-General may bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security.

      >Chapter XV, Article 99

That’s different from saying the Secretary-General can do anything without the Security Council’s approval.

60,000 out of 2.1 million. Destruction of which people? Gazans aren’t an ethnic group or racial group. They’re Palestinian Arabs. Is the IDF waging war in the West Bank too?

    10. CrystalRaine on

If Israel is is trying to destroy an entire people, then they’re not doing a very good job of it.

    11. What is the UN going to do? Saudi Arabia just executed like 20 people and they were almost on the Human Rights Council.

    12. The_Central_Brawler on

Israel should invite the Irish into Gaza on condition they provide security to the GHF.

    13. Gaius_Octavius_ on

Less than 5% of the population has died. They have a lot of work to do if they are intending to destroy the other 95%.

    14. UnusualBreadfruit306 on

It’s easy to tell someone else to do it. Send your own god dmammed army, let’s see how that works out

    15. Reminder that Ireland’s entire military is equivalent to the population of a small town (6000 personnel).

Can always rely on the Irish government to glom on to other countries for their defence capabilities and carry out the dirty work while holding luxury views about peacekeeping and neutrality.

    16. „Irish president urges UN to intervene in Gaza, citing ‚destruction of an entire people'“

Lol .. that is just idiotic. UN has less power than a toddler crying on the floor of target demanding a toy. When was the last time UN successfully intervening in anything?

Not ukraine. Not Sudan. Not Haiti. Not uighur.
