      that movie shuffled the hollywood 3 act structure by ending on the lowpoint and it was chilling

      I think it’s easily one of if not the most powerfully gripping movies of my lifetime.

      I very much remember sitting behind Aronofsky at the Toronto Premiere and even he was somewhat unsettled in his seat, like the rest of the room. I think it had premiered at Cannes a couple of months earlier.

      I was 18 or 19 when I saw this. I didn’t know what “requiem” meant and my goth friend told me it was a romantic comedy so I went with him. I left so stunned and silent.

      Quite frankly, that headline just traumatized more than the film ever did.

      I went to this movie on a date. A first date. Chose it because it had Jared Leto and he was on My So Called Life. That’s what I was going for when I chose the movie.

      By the time it got around to ass-to-ass, my date was sitting in their movie theater seat with their knees pulled up to their chin. Anyway, that’s how I met your mother.

      I worked for a Think Tank in DC working on what are called „Wicked Problems“ – These are typically complex social problems that cannot be fully solved and, as a result are like Sisyphus rolling the ball up the hill to have it respond by rolling down. Morale was often hard to keep above water and humor often saved us from the malaise. The end of this movie gave a chant that was oft repeated signalling the line of demarcation where things got ugly, arduous, and suffocating. When any team member said „Ass to ass…. Ass to ass!“ We knew we were there.

      First time i saw that movie it was on HBO. The irony of them airing it back to back, in hindsight, never fails to make me laugh.

      Anywho, as a dumb 17 year old I turned it on with like twenty minutes left on the first broadcast. So i got that end sequence with ZERO context. Watched the second broadcast up until a little past where i started and decided i didn’t need to see that ending a second time. Probably the absolute worst way to watch that film, with the possible exception of an airplane cut if it exists lol

      I was 16 and smoked weed with some friends and watched that movie. I’ve never been able to enjoy weed since.

      Meh, Trainspotting was more visually impactful while getting the point across about heroin addiction without feeling like a melodramatic extended PSA.

      I was in summer school in college the summer I turned 21 and most of my friends were not on campus. I rented a bunch of movies but vividly remembering the first and only time I watched this…. Turned it off and stared at the black tv. I felt dirty. Depressed. Immediately called a friend to go out drinking.

      It’s one of a handful of movies where I remember exactly the time and place I watched a movie.

      Watched on a double bill with „Last Exit to Brooklyn“.

      Now that was a depressing evening….

      A brilliant, unique, powerful but harrowing work. I’d like to rewatch, but I have never quite got over how this film made me feel.

      Reading these comments is interesting when you have no idea what this movie is or what everyone means by „ass to ass“

      I have an idea but idk how it traumatized people

      Spun and Gummo were also Some of my favorites.

      If you want something really borderline watch Bad Boy Bubby. Wow.

      I can’t be the only one who used Clint Mansell’s theme as driving music.

      It was always funny to me that the main theme for this movie was later used for the two towers trailer.

      I was commenting the other day that the whole „ass to ass“ thing was supposed to be the ultimate point of degradation and now, it is almost seen a common… (in some places).
