I really think there needs to be more enforcement here from the roads policing. I’m a cyclist in the Dublin 15 area, and the amount of illegal electric vehicles going around is crazy.
My bike is electric, and limited to the legal 25 kph, so it’s easy to see the illegal ones as they zoom away from you (which is the majority, as far as I can see).
Typically you see with e-scooters:
* Modded to go at illegal speeds (not limited to the legal 20 km/h)
* Underage users (users are supposed to be 16+)
* Frequently no lights, no helmet, dark clothes.
I’m just looking at them thinking ‚that’s a death-trap‘, the users need to be protected from themselves as much as anything.
Work in hospitals and have seen so many hospitalisations from scooter accidents – genuinely more than I’ve seen from car-on-car accidents. Be it falling off, hitting into something/someone, or being hit by a car. The injuries sustained are really, really awful. Worst I saw was a skull fracture requiring time in ICU and incredibly invasive surgery.
I genuinely think these scooters could be useful for town/city commuters, but our infrastructure is sadly not ready for them. They should be registered, have adequate regulations & policing to protect speed, and users should be more mindful of traffic rules and wear protective gear. I think if you’d seen some of the things I’d seen, you’d never go near them though.
Roads policing is a disaster.
Nearly hit a Just Eat delivery guy on one of these last night. Came flying around the corner while I was crawling along a narrow road in the car. He just about swerved out of the way. No lights or high vis on him
I just love the way the language used in articles like this are written.
The headline doesn’t even mention a car, and the article doesn’t mention a driver.
These autonomous cars really doing damage the while time by the way the media reports on incidents.

Saw a very close call the other evening. Car had green here in Clonsilla, moved forward, two young fellas on scooters came flying through the red light nearly got it. No helmets, dark clothes, night time. There’ll be a lot more deaths. I’m also terrified of them ploughing into my kids on footpaths.
I think what makes it even worse is the young kids on escooters haven’t even had the experience of riding normal bikes around in traffic to give them any situational awareness.
They ride around like maniacs because they dont know any better. Parents giving these kids scooters also haven’t a clue what they are giving them or how fast they can go.
Guards can only do so much, but as that report last week shows, traffic guards in Ireland dont care.
The whole situation is a mess.
I always wonder about the grown men (and sometimes women) that use these – lads in their 30’s and 40’s. I hope the car driver is getting the support they need after this terrible experience.
I’m a big believer in natural selection.
Sure how many people die on bikes and cars in a weekend. A nothing article to get people hating on net zero transportation
The wheels are too small. Maybe that could be a point of regulation. There’s so little control. And maybe a licence for the more powerful ones. I don’t really know. Grasping at straws. They’re so dangerous. We could try make bikes cheaper so people choose them? And safer cycle ways too. Keep cars put of them.
