I’m 56, I slap on my Quest 3 VR headset, put on a 360° virtual video and go for a wander around Japan on my treadmill
My mum keeps asking me if YouTube has any good crime dramas.
My mum is in her 60’s and apart from British Sewing Bee and football she doesn’t really watch any linear TV, when the pandemic hit she got into binge watching shows on streaming platforms and just does that now instead
She doesn’t really see the value in Youtube though, but I think that’s in part because her only experience of it comes from her grandkids using it for the most random shite in the world
Like there’s probably some cool channels about making clothes but she won’t find it because it’s the app that gave a home to Baby Shark
I gave up on the BBC years ago and only briefly returned during the pandemic. My main interests were history and art documentaries and I really felt that the quality had dropped to the point I no longer enjoyed them.
Youtube hasn’t provided me anything to replace them either, but I’ve used it to find some of the older stuff the BBC don’t make any more.
We prefer individual choice over shared values. What I mean is that in the past you HAD to watch Dancing with the Stars (or whatever it’s called) because otherwise your colleagues/friends/family would think you’re weird.
But now there’s so much choice that people don’t expect that any more and in fact we’re learning that individual choice is worth more. YouTube allows you to dive into a world of niches that BBC simply can’t touch on.
As an NBA fan in the UK, I don’t just consume NBA games, I listen and watch lots of podcasts on the topic, I follow individual players on social media and discuss stuff on Reddit. That plurality of media has generated choice and options.
