I’m open to it but just confused. Is she playing Jesus as a man or a woman? Like is the character of Jesus a woman in the play or is it a man? Or is the character of Jesus gender fluid?

Gender bended casting is FUN and INTERESTING and I do not understand why anyone cares that much. I’m not a fan of Erivo (her talent is incredible but I find her insufferable sorry) but I’m sure she’s giving a killer performance.

The Venn diagram of people complaining about her casting and lack of historical accuracy overlaps entirely with people who have never cared about historical accuracy when it comes to the skin/hair color of Jesus.
Hell, the musical itself was considered blasphemous when it came out in the early 70’s. My mom bought the original album, and I have listed to it so many times in my 60+ years. Now people are concerned with these casting decisions more than the way Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice decided to tell the story??
It’s theatre, no one should be bothered. We can allow actors to be from different countries, time periods, lifestyles to their characters, but draw the line at gender? Come on

while yes thats the original intention this seems more a way to get publicity then provoke or challenge anything. If you want to actually provoke and challenge flip the script and make a musical about Mary, or try to continue where the og musical ended at the Resurrection.
Im mostly just offended we’re still putting on Jesus Christ Superstar. Not for any ethical reasons, I just fucking hate everything Andrew Lloyd Weber has ever done.

I cannot believe people are in a tizzy over the most famous musical actress in the world being cast in a slightly unconventional role. She’s absolutely perfect for this role, in fact. She’s insanely talented, too.
She’s my Pedro Pascal. She can do as many projects as she wants and I’ll defend p much all of them 😅
Gotta agree with him here. There’s definitely times where casting her as Jesus may not be appropriate. This is not one of them. I can guarantee no one complaining has actually seen the play.
And a big reminder for the „purists“ is a lot of white guys get cast as Jesus when we know from biblical descriptions that Jesus was unlikely to resemble any white European. If you’re gonna yell for authenticity address that issue first. He was born a Jewish and Middle Eastern man.
Jesus is almost never cast in a historically or biblically accurate way, so the complainers can sit tf down.
